Journey through Asian flavours at these four inspiring new dining locations

The joys of Asia are often best found hidden in the secrets of its cuisine. This month, Secret Tables is welcoming four more restaurants in three different countries to the community.

Where will you go on a
culinary journey?

While the beautiful Malaysian island of Penang has long been a coveted destination for its street food, gēn 根 brings the very best of Malaysian cuisine to new levels of creativity, finesse and flavour. This "new Malaysian" cuisine restaurant is a place where Malaysia’s best produce is fused with passion, culture and childhood memories. Each dish is a deep dive into the nuances of Malaysian tastes and cultures.

Translating as the word root in English, gēn 根 is the culinary project of two passionate young Malaysian chefs, Johnson and Javi, who returned to Malaysia following cooking in kitchens around the world and now pride themselves in using only seasonal local ingredients.

Comprised of more than 17,000 islands and 300 ethnic groups, Indonesia reflects its diversity through its natural resources, cultures and gastronomy. Short for nusantara, which means archipelago in Indonesian, NUSA Indonesian Gastronomy showcases a piece of a different region through every bite using carefully selected ingredients collected from across the archipelago.
Chef Ragil creates a dynamic menu that changes regularly depending upon which ingredients are available fresh from the farms located from Sumatra to Papua. Simply put, the cuisine reflects the edible story of Indonesia and is delightfully delicious.

Situated inside a lovely Laotian residential home in a quiet neighbourhood of Vientiane, Amphone’s calming atmosphere envelops you in a space filled with abundant natural light peacefully shaded by the presence of large indoor plants. Fusing French colonial influences with local decoration and traditional Asian household items, Chef Peunth serves predominantly Laotian cuisine using local seasonal ingredients. While Amphone’s ambience is serene, its menu is full of bold, rich flavours and complex aromas. Enter this city oasis and switch off from the outside world...

Sangsaka’s executive chef, Kieran Morland, uses a wide range of traditional tastes and aromas created from the use of different woods and aromatics, such as coffee, clove, rambutan and coconut husk, to mimic distinct flavours of Indonesian cuisine from around the archipelago. Located in the heart of Bali's Kerobokan area, Sangsaka is an intimate 40-seater restaurant with a menu that changes on a weekly basis.
Patrons who discover the culinary delights of Sangsaka like to keep this exceptional restaurant a secret for fear they may not easily get another booking but now you’re in the know! Don’t miss your chance to feast at Sangsaka.
