Known for its golden pagodas, ancient cities, and incredible cuisine, Myanmar (or Burma) is probably the most misunderstood country in Southeast Asia when it comes to interpreting where you can travel, when you can travel, and what exactly the entry requirements for Myanmar are. The good news is that this incredible country is still welcoming visitors. However, most travelers will need to get hold of a visa to enter Myanmar before arriving in the country as a visa on arrival Myanmar is currently not available to tourists. To obtain a Myanmar travel visa visitors will need be required to hold an undamaged passport that is valid for at least six months following the date they intend to arrive in the country and a Myanmar tourist e visa acquired online or a Myanmar travel visa obtained from a consulate or embassy before arrival. Travellers are also expected to arrive with Travel Accident Insurance that proves they are covered for COVID-19, proof of sufficient funds for the duration of the stay, proof of accommodation for the duration of the stay, and a valid return airline ticket or proof of onward travel from Myanmar. A Myanmar tourist visa application also requires a recent color passport photo and a credit card/debit card for payment. Unlike many of the countries in Southeast Asia, there are strict health regulations for entering Myanmar, but these are relatively easy to adhere to and we will go into more details about these below.

Once you have collected all the relevant paperwork together and successfully obtained your tourist visa, you will be issued a stamp at your port of entry and will be free to enjoy one of the more mysterious, most beautiful, and off the beaten path Southeast Asian nations.
Note: Visitors may only apply for a single-entry visa to enter Myanmar for a maximum of 28 days as the government does not issue multi-entry visas. Those who wish to spend longer in the country will have to leave and begin a new Myanmar tourist visa application. It is also worth noting that entry regulations and visa requirements can change overnight, so please check with a government, or other trusted website, for updated Burma entry requirements before purchasing your flights or heading to one of the recognized land borders with Thailand or India (see below).

Apply Online for a Myanmar Tourist e Visa

Travel to Myanmar has been made much easier since the introduction of the Myanmar tourist e visa. This is a real time and money saver for those who don’t live close to a Myanmar Embassy or Consulate. An evisa to Myanmar is valid for up to 90 days following the date of issue and allows visitors to spend a maximum of 28 days exploring the country. Before applying online, make sure you have clear scans of the ID pages of your valid passport, a clean scan of a color passport photo taken within the past three months and all the relevant travel documents. Travellers are required to accurately fill in the secure online application form and double-check all information before proceeding to payment. After the application and payment have been submitted a Myanmar tourist e Visa application number will be sent to you in email which you can use in conjunction with your passport number to track the progress of your application (which is usually very fast and typically takes less than a week and often no more than three business days). Once the application has been verified, an approval letter will be sent to your email which needs to be printed out and presented to the Immigration Officer on arrival in the country. Other documents you MUST have before travelling to Myanmar include a Health Declaration Form and proof of internationally recognized health insurance, and travel insurance is always a good idea. Arriving in Myanmar without a printed copy of a health insurance document will require visitors to purchase COVID-19 health insurance from Myanmar Insurance.
