Journey Along Thailand’s Ancient Waterways
For centuries, Thais have depended on the country’s network of rivers and canals to sustain life and allow transportation. After the fall of Ayutthaya, Siam’s third capital of Bangkok was founded along the banks of the Chao Phraya River due to the area’s fertile soil and watery routes. While Bangkok has since transformed from a swampy land to a concrete jungle, its waterways still serve as important passages and connect the city to the rest of the country.
On a multi-day journey with Secret Retreats, contemporary travellers can travel back in time aboard the privately chartered Namthip Luxury Rice Barge between the bustling capital of Bangkok, the ancient kingdom of Ayutthaya and the typical central Thai town of Supanburi. Each Member below can be booked individually or together as part of an exclusive itinerary created just for you.

Historically a rice barge transporting rice, sugar and sand up-river from Bangkok to remote riverside towns, the Namthip has been converted into an elegant river cruiser respecting its traditional design while incorporating luxurious contemporary amenities.
On the privately chartered voyage, cruise along the grand Chao Phraya River, leaving Bangkok behind and heading to Ayutthaya. Unwind in one of the two comfortable cabins, or leisurely observe life along the river from the vessel’s handsome hull, wooden deck, timber panelling, woven rattan furniture and indulgent amenities on both the upper and lower decks. While Namthip is available for short day trips, it’s best experienced travelling to the ancient city of Ayutthaya where you can discover the region’s magnificent temple ruins and fall asleep aboard the boat by the tree-lined riverside.
