“Having grown up in the main house at Chakrabongse Villas and watched the sun set over Wat Arun, I really wanted to share my love for my home with special guests. My grandfather, Prince Chakrabongse, built this house as somewhere to get changed when he went to ceremonies in the Grand Palace 100 years ago. This shows how close the property is to the heart of old Bangkok. Guests can walk to the most famous temples in Bangkok in just 15 minutes to half an hour. I always like staying in the older parts of any major city and being able to walk around. This is one of the key features here. Each time I come home I like to see what's changed in the garden, see the wagtails flitting about, try a new dish with the chef, relax and stare at the river. I hope the guests feel the same way. I enjoy meeting them and sharing their experiences. Sharing is one of the common values of all Secret Retreats.”

Welcome to Bangkok

Founded in 1782 by King Rama I, the “City of Angels” is an energetic metropolis that pulsates with life—a perfect entry point for exploring all that Thailand has to offer. Often referred to as Krung Thep by Thais, the capital city is home to one of Asia’s richest historical, cultural and architectural heritages. Delicious aromatic street food permeates the air, varied outdoor markets, cooking classes, indulgent massages and nonstop nightlife all contribute to its magnetic charm.

Southeast Asia’s largest museum the National Museum, the expansive golden royal complex Grand Palace (home of the radiant Emerald Buddha), and the sprawling reclining Buddha can all be found in the Rattanakosin District. A boat ride up and down the Chao Phraya River and klongs (canals), lined with temples and historic edifices, is essential. The downtown old western quarter, filled with neoclassical buildings and antiques shops, and Chinatown offer additional sides to this flavourful city. Weekend travellers will delight in the Chatuchak Weekend Market containing more than 15,000 stalls selling goods from every part of Thailand, or the unique floating market known as Taling Chan. Bangkok’s charms are addictively splendorous.
