Yusun-gwan Hanok, a former temple hostel for wandering Buddhist monks and followers, is situated close to Daeheungsa Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. In the late 1960s, it started taking regular tourists as customers. Yusun-gwan Hanok, an inn with more than a century of history, is today recognized as a significant piece of local cultural heritage.
The hotel's century-old structures were gradually disfigured by random renovations prior to Chakchak Studio's makeover, depriving them of their original status. As a result, maintaining the building's original form as much as possible, the alteration of these still-in-use buildings is more about restoring their "original appearance" than their "form".
All of the inside walls and ceilings are composed of traditional Korean paper called Hanji, which creates cosy areas. Inside windows with Korean paper coverings on both sides have been fitted for added insulation and warmth; these windows also function as curtains for light management. Each room's Hanji and Sambe allows light to go through, creating a calming aura that permeates the interior areas.
The Yusun-gwan Hanok’s courtyard's garden was removed by the architects to make as much space as possible for the surrounding mountains, ravines, centuries-old trees, rocks, and other natural features.
A structure on the property that was formerly utilized as a facility for community showers has been transformed into a café with a garden so that guests can take in the beauty of the hotel's surroundings. With a history spanning more than a century, Yusun-gwan is regarded as a significant Haenam cultural heritage site that serves as a magnet for both tourists and community gatherings. The phrase "the present moment" serves as a link between a deep sense of past and the future.

Mr. Han Dong-In
Your Host and The Team
“In an era when culture is competitive, I often heard that there is no place to sleep compared to many foods in Haenam. Yusun-gwan came into my eyes. It was like fate. In Haenam, there is Yusun-gwan, the “first inn in Korea”, and the building has been old & collapsed as it has been operated without permission. That was unfortunate. Many years ago, I conveyed my intention to Daeheungsa Temple to restore it well and operate it properly, and it seems that my heart reached the Buddha. A few years later, Daeheungsa Temple, which owns Yusun-gwan, made an offer regarding the overall operation.”
