Myeongjae Yunjeong (1629–1714), a scholar living under King Sukjong of the Joseon Dynasty, called Myeongjae Gotaek in Nonsan, South Chungcheong, his home. Myeongjae Yunjeong reportedly turned down every kind government position the monarch offered him. The Donghak Peasant Revolution, an armed rebellion in Korea in 1894 led by peasants and adherents of the Donghak religion—a pantheistic religion viewed by many rebels as a political ideology—as well as the Korean War (1950–1953) were a massive threat to the property but thanks to the efforts of his disciples the house was spared, and he continued to practice the virtue of simplicity and sharing in life and taught it to younger generations. Although the house has a distinct and delicate interior, it was quite moderate when comparing to other house of the same calibre. Even though it was built more than 300 years ago, each generation and descendent that lived on the property has maintained and kept the original decorations to provide the most realistic and accurate experience.
Located at the bottom of Mount Noseong, Myeongjae Gotaek has 7 rooms all in a square layout. Each room is equipped with a main house, an annex, a large room flanked by a daecheong, the open wooden floor that play the role of living room and a numaru with an open view of the village and a mountain.
In addition, visitors can rent the courtyard's "library," an annex with a sound system, a beam projector, and a bathroom, for events like meetings or shows.
The home also runs a variety of for-pay traditional experience events, including coming-of-age rituals, tea ceremonies, natural dyeing, Korean classical music, and you may even get married in a traditional manner there.
