gēn 根 is a "New Malaysian" Cuisine restaurant, and a place where Malaysia’s best produce are fused with passion, culture and childhood memories, delivered with the very best hospitality for young dining pleasure. Each dish is a deep dive into the nuances of Malaysian flavours and cultures.
Patrons of gēn 根 , Johnson and Javi, returned to Malaysia following a journey of cooking experiences through the kitchens of many countries around the world. Their mission was to undertake the gēn 根 project and put their love of the beauty of local products and ingredients to form this Modern Malaysian Community Restaurant.

Gēn’s 根 minimalist, almost functional setting, offers a long dining table that can comfortably accommodate up to 24 diners. The open-plan kitchen holds no barriers, offering guests the opportunity to watch the ballet between the chef and his brigade, accompanied by the soft melody of the order whispers and the clang of the pans.

The food is exclusively and proudly based on the freshest local produce available, inspired by Malaysian traditional taste. Some of the dishes are deconstructed, some other are presented in a new creative way to highlight the taste and essence of each mouthful. Perhaps the best description for Chef Johnson’s cuisine is “contemporary Malaysian cuisine, rooted in nostalgia and flavours from his childhood”.

“Years of crazy adventures have led us to this delicious point, and gēn 根 is born. It represents a fresh start to me, also serves as a reminder that nature is all around us. I am delighted for being a Malaysian chef, able to discover our beautiful local produces, flavours and cultures.”

We Care

At Gēn 根, it is very important for us to understand each and the ingredients and the communities that they are sourced from.

For our produce, we use local farmers who maintain sustainable practices and actively care for the health of their land and livestock. We support farm-to-table buying and avoid the use of processed foods and chemicals. We source all our ingredients locally and actively support small local farmers rather than large corporations.

We personally visit each farm from where we buy our produce.

We endeavour to understand the real costs of the ingredients and maximise our use for the every part of the produce to achieve minimum waste.

We also use methods such as ferments, pickles and preserves in our menus to create a collaborative network that integrates sustainable food production, processing, distribution, consumption and waste management in order to minimise our environmental footprint.

“gēn 根, which translates as the word “root” in English, is a culinary project run by two young, creative Malaysian chefs who pride themselves in using only seasonal local ingredients. Whilst the island of Penang is known for its street food, gēn 根 brings Malaysian dishes to a new level.”
