The Satri House Hotel, is a beautiful Heritage Hotel in Luang Prabang that was built as a royal residence in 1904 by Prince Bounkhong in the French colonial style with cool interiors of seasoned hardwoods decorated with art and antiques, Satri House is a jewel in the heart of the Kingdom of Laos and has to be one of the best places to stay in Luang Prabang. Once the royal capital city of Laos, or Lanxhang (the land of a million elephants) as it was once known, Luang Prabang is located within the mountain ranges to the north of the current day capital of Vientiane and is revered for its French architecture and golden temples on the banks of the mighty River Mekong. Satri House Luang Prabang was also the childhood home of the 'Red Prince', Prince Souphanouvong, who was active in liberating Laos from French rule and had close ties to communist Vietnam hence the 'Red Prince' moniker. He later became the President of Laos from December 1975 to October 1986 to Laos resistance leader turned first president of the Lao People's Democratic Republic. This wonderful heritage property is today under the stewardship of Lamphoune Voravongsa. Keen to celebrate the incredible beauty of Laos, Lamphoune has created an exquisite and elegant boutique hotel in Luang Prabang that she is passionate about sharing with guests who want to immerse themselves in the Laos culture and discover this delightful northern Laos city. Originally built at the beginning of the 20th Century, Satri House Hotel Luang Prabang was given a refurbishment in 2002 and enlarged six years later. The property retains its classic colonial Indochine design and now features three luxury suites and 35 guestrooms - 14 Heritage Rooms, and 14 Deluxe Rooms, 2 Satri House Suites, 1 Satri Junior Suite, and 4 Lotus Pond Pavilions. Guests are invited to enjoy the impeccable gardens from the gorgeous dining room which boasts an exquisite menu of traditional Asian and classic Western specialties. Satri Luang Prabang also boasts a luxury spa with high ceilings where visitors can enjoy a steam room, plunge pool, and jacuzzi before indulging in a therapeutic traditional massage. There are two tiled swimming pools on the property, the main pool is to the front of the main house, and a newer pool is nearer the spa complex. The Satri House Hotel is conveniently situated a stone's throw from the famous night market, a few steps from Luang Prabang's not to be missed restaurant, Manda de Laos, as well as a surprising selection of cafes and restaurants. The Mekong River is also on the doorstep where the magnificent Satri Boat with five cabins, a restaurant, and a bar is moored and can be booked for private events, parties, and cruises.

Your Host and The Team

“My ambition when I created Satri House was to show the rest of the world, the beauty of Laos - the indigenous lifestyle of its people, its simplicity, elegance and sense of grace. Inspired by Lao culture and built at the turn of the last century as the residence of Prince Soupha-nouvong, (the resistance leader known as the “Red Prince” who later became the Lao People’s Democratic Republic’s first president in 1975) Satri House is deemed the most stylish boutique residence in Luang Prabang. I like to share with guests my favorite spots to admire the sunrise, walk around the old town or along the Mekong, listen to the silence in temples… Just like all hosts in Secret Retreats, I like to let people feel how beautiful life can be here.”

Lamphoune Voravongsa - Luang Prabang’s Protector of the Past

Born in Laos, but exiled to France at a young age, Lamphoune Voravongsa returned to her roots after 30 abroad and opened her first shop in Vientiane specialising in traditional garments, jewellery, paintings and antique statues. She extended her business to include several shops in Luang Prabang before purchasing the former residence of Prince Soupha-nouvong, the resistance leader who later became the Lao People’s Democratic Republic’s first president in 1975.

Lamphoune restored the colonial mansion, which was built in 1904, and turned it into one of the most stylish boutique hotels in Luang Prabang as well as a classified UNESCO World Heritage Site. Lamphoune’s passion to empower other women led her to name the hotel Satri House, meaning ‘House of Women’. Inspired by Lao culture at the turn of the last century, Lamphoune’s greatest ambition is to show the rest of the world the beauty of Laos – its indigenous lifestyle, simplicity, elegance and grace. She also plays an active role in a handicraft association, Satri Lao Silk, which is devoted to preserving Laotian traditions.

View exclusive collections made from Lao handlooms using different ancient techniques to create both traditional and contemporary designs. Every piece is unique and ranges from rough coarse wild silk to fine luxurious silk, and silk organza. “Khang” also invites guests to experience Lao weaving and natural dyeing at one of its various courses. The courses range from half day workshops to a several months long professional training course. Situated on the top level of the showroom, the weaving studio can accommodate up to four people for a weaving class or up to six people for a natural dyeing class.
