This journey has been personally designed by Touny, who was born in Laos and her husband Jean Paul passionate about nature and hill tribes in Laos. They share their favourite spots across the Muang La Valley and their knowledge for the area.
All our itineraries have generally been constructed on the basis of the rooms that have the most charm or best view, and not necessarily the first prices, nor the most expensive suites.
We can of course adjust according to your request.

This journey is designed as an extension to a stay in Luang Prabang, we propose here an exploration of the mountains and villages of North Laos, with an approach of local minority hill tribes (Hmong and Khamu tribes); or thanks to the new train connecting Kunming to Laos, it can be combined also with all our programs in Southern China.
This is your chance to meet and understand the ethnic people who live peacefully up on the mountaintops in North Laos. Understand their surroundings and how it has shaped their way of life and what they eat. Learn about their customs and traditions that have been passed down, and travelled for many generations. Communities thrive on these scenic mountaintops and forests. Enjoy their walks, forests, and waterfalls to relax and learn what living in heaven is like.

Your Journey Day by Day

Day 1 : Muang Xai (-/-/-)
You will arrive at Oudomxay train station and a driver will be ready to take you to your resort. You will be taken to Namkat Yorlapa Resort, a perfect hideaway piece of paradise nestled in the forests with a flowing stream nearby to give you that perfect piece of tranquillity. Only steps away from local Khamu, Lao Ly, and Hmong villages. Take this chance to really take in the myriad of native flora and the communities of this beautiful region while you breathe in the fresh air.

Day 2 : Muang La Valley (B/L/-)
After breakfast, a driver will be waiting to take you to Pak Huay Khai. The drive there is filled with pleasant views of the River Nam Ma, terraced rice fields, and small villages along the banks of the river.
On arrival, you will begin to trek into a deep lush forest following a mountain stream leading into rice fields where you will meet farmers and learn about how their environment allows them to cultivate, and hunt for fish and small game. You will walk deeper into the forests for an hour or so and pop out at Baan Phavie, a beautiful local indigenous Khamu village on top of a hill, where you will have lunch and learn about their lives. After your meal, you will dive into some nearby waterfalls to cool off and relax. Rinse yourself off around early afternoon so you can walk back down and drive back to your resort where you can enjoy the rest of the day frolicking around the hotel or exploring Muang Xai.

Day 3 : Muang La Valley (B/L/-)
The following morning after breakfast, there will be a driver with a four-wheel drive SUV ready to take you to meet the three of the many ethnic groups of Laos. You will be driven up 1,300 meters above sea level to be surrounded by magnificent views of mountainous scenery. You will first reach a Khamu village to visit. After you have learned their way of life, you will drive deeper into the mountains to a Hmong village where you will study the importance of their livestock, and learn how much their animals mean to them, and their culture. From this point, you will have the option to take a 30-minute walk to an Ikho village, an ethnic group that originated from Yunnan and Tibet, long ago. You will get to learn about their daily life and customs that they have passed down for many generations that have been kept alive till today.
At this point, you will enjoy a picnic lunch high up on the mountaintop with views after which you will have the chance to visit more Ikho villages before descending back down to your resort where you will get the rest of the day to yourself.

Day 4 : Muang Xai (B/-/-)
Have a relaxing breakfast in the morning, and be ready to check out for there will be a driver prepared to take you to Oudomxay train station to continue your journey back to Luang Prabang or continue to Yunnan to explore further into Secret Retreats adventures we have to offer in Laos, Northern Thailand, or Southern China.
