Highlights of the Journey:

  • Suwon Hwaseong Fortress
  • Dae Jang Geum Park
  • Nam June Paik Art center

Suwon Hwaseong Fortress was constructed by King Jeongjo (reigning 1777~1800), the 22nd king of Joseon dynasty (1392-1910) after moving the tomb of his father Sadoseja, Crown Prince, who had been victimized in faction struggles in the court, and put inside a rice chest and had died in it, from Mt. Baebong, Yangju, to Mt. Hwa, Suwon. The local government headquarters moved from near Mt. hwa to the current location under Mt. Paldal, Suwon. The mountain was considered as the best place to build tombs according to the theory of geomancy in those days. This itinerary is a travel through time in Korean History.

Your Journey Day by Day

from 745 USD /person for 2 days / 1 night

based on 2 people traveling together and sharing the same room

Day 1 : Seoul – Suwon (-/L/D)
Guide and driver pick up at your hotel in Seoul and drive about 40km South to Suwon Hwaseong Fortress that was built to protect the city, and designated as a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site in1997 for its historical value. The walls stretch for 5.7 kilometers, with Paldalsan Mountain at the center. The fortress, constructed from 1794 to 1796, was built as a display of King Jeongjo’s filial piety towards his father and to build a new pioneer city with its own economic power. Suwon was one of four main regional government centers during the Joseon dynasty.
We continue next to Hwaseong Haenggung Palace that was used by the Joseon kings since the time of King Jeongjo (r. 1776-1800). A haenggung is a temporary palace where the king and royal family retreated to during a war. In addition to being used as a shelter during war, King Jeongjo also stayed here during trips to worship at his father's tomb.
After lunch, we walk around Wolhwawon Garden inspired by the traditional gardens of Guangdong Province in China and symbol of the friendship and common cultural heritages of the two countries. We end the day with a visit to the art center called “The House where Nam June Paik lives on” , designed with the artist's works and research in mind. With exhibitions, education, and research, the center aims to continue researching the works of Nam Jun Paik.
Check in at your hotel for the night. Lunch and dinner included.
HOTEL: Seo Yeon Jae Hanok
Day 2 : Suwon - Seoul (B/L/-)
After breakfast, we start the day with Dae Jang Geum Park in Yongin, Gyeonggi-do is the largest historical drama set in Korea. Facilities in the theme park are semi-permanent facilities reflecting the architectural style, lifestyle and culture of the past, based on historical records. We drive to Wawoojongsa Temple located in the middle of Yeonhwasan Mountain range and surrounded by 48 magnificent mountain peaks. Wawoojongsa Temple is the main branch of the Nirvana order, and has approximately 3,000 Buddha statues. The most popular statue is buldu, an 8-meter high statue of Buddha's head, situated at the temple's entrance.
After lunch, we stop at a Ceramic Art Center - ceramics have been developed here since the early days of the Joseon dynasty, as the nation’s best materials for making ceramics, such as clay, white clay, and Kaolin, were produced around Ssarisan Mountain in Bungnae-myeon. The center offers you a chance to see the process of making art pieces. There are over 60 personal exhibition halls with various styles of ceramics.
