Varanasi, formerly called Benares, is one of the most sacred pilgrimage sites for Hindus and a holy destination for Buddhists. Located on the banks of the Ganges River, it is believed to be one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world. The Ganges is the most sacred river in India, where legend says the goddess Ganga descended to earth in answer to King Bhagirath’s prayers to liberate the souls of his ancestors. Hindus believe that bathing in the holy waters of the Ganges cleanses sins and guides the soul toward Moksha, the ultimate freedom from the cycle of life and death. This spiritual background makes Varanasi a must-visit destination for anyone seeking an immersive Varanasi tour package.
Along the river, the Varanasi Ghats form a series of stone embankments facing east toward the rising sun. These ghats allow pilgrims to reach the river for sacred dips, perform religious rites, and observe centuries-old cremation rituals. There are 84 Ghats and over 300 temples dedicated to Hindu deities spread along an eight kilometer stretch of the river, creating an unforgettable spiritual landscape for every traveler exploring a Varanasi tour package.
