North Sumatra is the province stretching from the Indian Ocean to the Strait of Malacca, comprising Medan as capital, Lake Toba, formed from the caldera of an ancient volcano and part of Gunung Leuser National Park. The National Park is 150 km long, over 100 km wide at an average of 1,500 m in elevation. 11 peaks are over 2,700 m and Mount Leuser culminates at 3,119 m. This is one of the two remaining habitats for Sumatran orangutans, but some other mammals can be spotted in the park: Sumatran elephant, Sumatran tiger, Sumatran rhinoceros, siamang, Sumatran serow, sambar deer and leopard cat. The journey proposed here is a low impact ecotourism adventure. Accommodations are basic, but this is off tourism tracks.
