Discover Malang and its Dutch Colonial Heritage
- A Secret Retreats journey -This journey has been personally designed by Lucienne, who is a native from Malang and owner of Tugu Hotels. Tugu’s mission is to preserve and share the rich cultural heritage and the romantic history of Indonesia alive.
We can of course adjust according to your request.
Highlights of the Journey:
- Malang Temples
- Kawisari Coffee Plantation
This discovery of Malang can be arranged all year long as temperature in Malang is always a few degrees lower than the rest of Java. Dry season runs from May to October normally. Malang is only 1hr driver from Surabaya Airport (tollway) and has much more to offer than Surabaya itself.
Malang is a cultural city, built by the Dutch colonizers at the end of the 18th century for its pleasant climate. Malang’s nostalgic atmosphere results from the fact that Dutch planters and civil servants used to retire here until the early 1900s. Many old houses and buildings from the Dutch Colonial times are still available and well maintained in the very center (around Hotel Tugu); some small antiques shops are worth to visit. Malang earned its first fortunes from coffee, which used to be flourishing on the surrounding hillsides, but very few are still active. We propose to visit one of the last one, covering 900 hectares of coffee (Robusta and Arabica), but also rubber trees, durian and many other fruits.
There also a fair number of Hindu temples "candi" and many archaeological relics to explore, some dating back to the 8th century, when Malang was the center of the Kanjuruhan Kingdom.

Your Journey Day by Day

No arrangement for meals. Hotel Tugu offers several dining options.
Option 1: In the morning, after breakfast your guide will show you around Malang, starting with a visit to Wonosari Tea Plantation also. This vast and beautiful plantation is situated on the slope of Mount Arjuna, about 30 km from Malang, with a view of Mt. Arjuna. You may watch the tea leaf picking, the process of tea-making, as well as other traditional daily activities of this tea plantation. Malang also inherited many ancient “candi”; beautiful remains of kingdoms from many hundreds years ago, not only in the Island of Java but also other parts of Southeast Asia. As a fertile region, Malang and its surrounding was once the centre of political power of the 8th century Kanjuruhan Kingdom, which explains why Malang region has many archaeological relics. Even after the collapse of the Kingdom of Singosari, Malang region remained to be an important region for the following dynasties of East Java.
Or Option 2: Mt. Bromo Sunrise and Savannah Adventure (departure 1am!) Mount Bromo and Mount Penanjakan National Park, internationally famous for its most magical sunrise, is a haven for nature lovers, with its volcano, craters and sand plateaus as well as breath-taking serene savannah. On the way back to the hotel, we would visit Coban Pelangi Waterfall, one of the few unexploited secrets of East Java; a 30-meter high hidden beauty surrounded by a pine forest as well as the famous Jago temple. To catch the sunrise moment, the excursion would depart at 1 am and will be arriving back at the hotel before noon. The stunning beauty of the mountain could also be experienced during the day time, that case departure at 6 am and back to the hotel about 3 pm.
Relax for the rest of the day, you can enjoy afternoon tea or a spa treatment. No arrangement for meals.
Lunch will be served at the lodge, original house built by the Dutch founder of the plantation.
Then time to return to Malang, to reach Hotel Tugu around 4-5pm... and rest.
