Mystical, even magical, Inle Lake stretches over twenty kilometers long, nestled in the mists of the Shan plateau. It is on this lake that the tribe of Inthar builds its houses on stilts and its cultures over the water and lives of various activities. Here the tomatoes, the flowers, grow on floating islands several meters thick which consist of dry herbs, aquatic herbs and water hyacinths, fixed to the bottom of the lake using bamboo stakes . Fishing also plays an important role, and the fishermen here row in a unique way, standing with one leg!
Various crafts are still practiced, such as weaving (silk and lotus fiber), the forge to make both household utensils and agricultural tools, goldsmithing, the manufacture of traditional Shan lacquers and local cigar (cheroot ) or traditional paper.
The proliferation of ancient Buddhist monasteries, the remarkable ruins in the villages of Sagar and Indein, the Phaung Daw Oo pagoda (the most revered sanctuary in the south of Shan State) are all sites to visit, not to mention the many local markets.

Your Journey Day by Day
based on 2 person sharing the same room
A typical day could be to start with a visit to one of the 5 days market, visit the Phaung Daw Oo Pagoda the famous 5 Buddha images and Ywa Ma Village to see Floating market place, longneck lady, umbrella making and gold & silver smiths. Continue to Ngape Chaung monastery formely called the jumping cats monastery and passes by the floating gardens. Lunch (included) and site visit at Inthar Heritage House where the 5 conservation projects are operating on site in In Paw Khon Village. Visit silk, cotton & lotus weaving after lunch in the same village. Then continue to Nampan village where you can see Boat and cheroots making.
The second day could be dedicated to visit other sites like:
- Main Tauk Village and Forest Monastery with a meditation monastery on the top of the small hill and panoramic view of the lake
- Khaung Taing Village - known for local snacks and a natural hot spring
- Thaung Tho Temple Complex & Monastery, at the south of Inle Lake. Inthar and Shan villagers come for worship and festival gatherings. All can be decided with your guide. Each night, dinner at the hotel.
