Discover East Java

- A Secret Retreats journey -
5 days / 4 nights
from 1,075 USD /person

This journey has been personally designed by Ibu Ati, who is a native Balinese who has traveled around the Archipelago to understand and share the diversity of its people and cultures.

All our itineraries have generally been constructed on the basis of the rooms that have the most charm or best view, and not necessarily the first prices, nor the most expensive suites.
We can of course adjust according to your request.

Highlights of the Journey:

  • Mount Bromo
  • Kalibaru, Javanese Village
  • Kawah Ijen, sulphur lake

This journey through East Java will lead us from Surabaya to Banyuwangi, crossing many smoking volcanoes, national parks, traditional villages and unspoilt panoramas. East Java is often synonymous of raw volcanic power and unique landscapes created by these unpredictable mountains of fire, offering inspiring sunrises like on top of the Mount Bromo or Mount Ijen, with its crater lake and brave sulphur miners. The volcanic activity has created a largely fertile area and verdant agriculture all across the region. At the end of this journey, we will take a ferry to cross the Bali Strait - a stretch of water separating Java and Bali of 2.4 km wide at its narrowest between Ketapang and Gilimanuk- and drop you in the south of Bali.

Day 2 : Surabaya- Bromo (B/-/-)
In the morning your guide will show you around the city of Surabaya with its markets and lively places. Harbour city, Surabaya is not a tourist destination but a pleasant city to live in. Strolling through its streets you can observe the traditional life of Indonesians, visit a typical clove cigarette factory, known here as "kretek", the most popular cigarettes in Indonesia. After check out, we depart towards Mount Bromo through cultivated lands and plantations – lands in this area are very fertile, and many crops are grown there. The road takes you to an altitude of 1,700m on the slope of Mount Bromo. Check in at the hotel, which is the starting point for the ascent of the Mount Bromo very early the next morning.
No arrangement for meals.
HOTEL: Hotel Jiwa Jiwa (Deluxe Room)
Day 3 : Bromo - Kalibaru (B/-/-)
Early in the morning, we jump on a jeep for a sunrise excursion to Mount Pananjakan to admire the sunrise over Mount Bromo and the entire chain of volcanoes of East Java. We then cross a sea of sand and walk up all the steps to the crater of the volcano. We go back to the hotel for a solid breakfast, a bit of rest and a good shower, then we leave for the East Java National Park region. We shall reach by the end of afternoon the village of Kalibaru. Check-in at the Hotel Margo Utomo, a typical Javanese "farm hotel", situated in the middle of plantations.
No arrangement for meals.
HOTEL: Hotel Margo Utomo (Hillview Deluxe Room)
Day 4 : Kalibaru - Ijen (B/-/D)
After breakfast, we go for gentle and refreshing walks through the plantations around the hotel and the village, then before noon, we take the car to East Java to reach the region of the great soufrière of Kawah Ijen. We settle down in the charming Ijen Resort. Have a swim in its infinity pool and overlooking the volcano. Dinner at the resort is included and served in the garden (or restaurant)
HOTEL: Ijen Resort (Deluxe Villa)
Day 5 : Ijen – Banyuwangi - Bali (B/-/-)
Early in the morning, we go hiking to reach Kawah Ijen (Ijen crater) surrounded by steep slopes rising above a magnificent sulfurous turquoise lake. The climb to the edge of the crater takes about an hour and a half. From the edge of the crater there is a breathtaking perspective of the lake and the surrounding mountains. On the way we will cross several sulfur carriers coming up from the crater with loads of more than sixty kilos. Take a walk around the crater to admire this unique landscape. Gentle descent back for breakfast and check out, then we take a car to Ketapang port and cross the strait by ferry to Bali (about 30 minutes crossing). We reach Bali via the port of Gilimanuk, and we drive south to drop off at your hotel and continue your journey (3-4 hrs drive from Gimimanuk)
