The Nanee is an 18-room and suite heritage boutique hotel that pays homage to its Newari heritage both in design and location. The name ‘Nanee’ is a Newari word for ‘courtyard’, and grand, traditional Newari homes were often courtyard houses (a series of rooms and accommodations built around a central courtyard) and The Nanee Bhaktapur is no exception. The owners and the team of The Nanee are keen to share the culture and traditions of their ancient home with guests, and this cultural identity is clearly visible in the architecture and interior design of the hotel. The Nanee is a beautiful blend of contemporary and ancient design, from handmade bricks to recycled timber, polished concrete floors to polished hardwood doors, the Nanee is Newari in heritage but clearly has its own character and personality too. Décor is simple, minimalist, and elegant, and links to tradition and Bhaktapur’s history are evident in the architecture, in the way this Kathmandu boutique hotel was built to be an integral part of the community with no perimeter wall. The hotel works closely with the local community to create cultural bridges for guests to experience Newari and Bhaktapur culture through art, cuisine and cultural events. It can be very much an immersive stay experience, one that promotes mindfulness and responsible travel, as guests are able to connect so closely with the local people, their culture, and their stories, to really enjoy a true sense of place and an understanding of this ancient location from a local’s perspective.

Mr. Aditya Piya
Your Host and The Team
The Ancient and the Historic are on your Doorstep during Your Stay at The Nanee
The ancient art of Vaastu Shastra was employed in the design of The Nanee to enhance the harmony between the ancient and modern, and to ensure a balance between the building, its living spaces, and the environment. The practice identifies five areas of the building and aligns them with the elements of earth, water, air, space, and fire, and in so doing ensures an interior and external harmony, both practically and spiritually. With such deep roots in tradition, The Nanee could only ever be located in the medieval streets of ancient Bhaktapur. The hotel is very much within one of the most important historical districts of the area, and the Indrayani Temple is just a short 5-minute stroll from The Nanee, as is the Bhaktapur Durbar Square. Additionally, the Boudhanath Stupa and Pashupatinath Temple are just a short drive away, about 10kms from the hotel, as conveniently is the International Airport. The community that The Nanee is located within shares a wonderful opportunity for guests to get under the skin and really experience this fascinating city and its age old culture and traditions. The Nanee Hotel team are keen to provide an immersive stay experience for guests, to help them connect with the local community and learn about the unique ways of life and the many stories on the streets that house The Nanee. A stay here is more than just a very comfortable stay in a wonderful boutique hotel. The hotel team work hard to be a part of their local community, in sourcing products and produce locally they actively support local businesses, they employ locally, they work with local artists and artisans to create rare opportunities for guests to connect with the traditional arts of the Kathmandu Valley, and all with a view to contributing positively to their home community, not just in terms of dollars spent, but in terms of cultural exchange and real, mutually supportive, community values.

- The Nanee was built with sharing, preserving and showcasing the traditions, culture and histories of the people of Bhaktapur with visitors and guests to support the community of this ancient city.
- The Hotel team at The Nanee are more than simply colleagues and team members, we see each other as family, and an integral part of our home community from which most of us hail.
- The service style at The Nanee is imbued with local Newari values, and is both professional and warm. The philosophy of The Nanee’s service style is to invite the world outside to their home inside, connecting the local community with our guests and sharing fascinating experiences with our travelers.
- One of the 125 ethnic groups that make up the population of Nepal is the Newar. The Newari are the indigenous people of the Kathmandu valley. The long-lived traditions and values of the Newar people make their culture a unique one. From their language (the Nepal Bhasa), ethnic dress, art and crafts, festivals and their cuisines, the rich Newar culture is fascinating and worth preserving and this we believe is the role of good, responsible, travel and hospitality, to connect peoples and share their stories in the name of increasing understanding and preserving the culture and histories of our homes for the generations to come.
