A Japanese Zen Retreat offering Traditional Accommodation and Private Facilities
The Zen Retreat NAMI is a Japanese Zen Retreat that provides exclusive use of an entire traditional residence, it is the perfect choice for guests looking to discover Kyushu and enjoy privacy, authenticity and a strong connection with Japanese heritage during their stay. The property contains just one accommodation unit, with a maximum capacity of four people, so visitors are not simply booking an individual room but reserving the historic house, a traditional Kominka house, for their own group. The main accommodation covers approximately 97 square meters, while the complete private area expands to around 180 square meters when the shoin-style tearoom, private dining space and earthen-floored areas are included. The interior preserves numerous details from the original building, including traditional timber construction, aged pillars, historic craftsmanship and original hand-blown glass windows that have a character all of their own and reflect the techniques and craftmanship of an earlier era. The sleeping arrangements combine Western-style beds with traditional Japanese bedding. One bedroom has two single beds, while another sleeping area uses two futons that are prepared each evening. The tatami rooms overlook the dry garden and provide a quiet place for reading, drinking tea or simply observing the changing scenery. One of the most memorable architectural details is the fusuma sliding-door artwork that was created by the head priest of the neighbouring Gyokuho-ji Temple, creating a direct connection between the house and the temple beside it. The facilities are designed to provide comfort without compromising the character of the historic residence. Guests have access to complimentary Wi-Fi, tea-making facilities, toiletries, a walk-in shower and a separate bathtub, while the air-conditioning unit provides both heating and cooling in the sleeping areas.
The house also incorporates traditional thresholds and steps, so please note that it is not suitable for wheelchair users or guests who require fully accessible accommodation. Dining is an important component of the Zen Meditation Retreat Japan experience, with dinner and breakfast included in the stay. The evening meal takes a seasonal approach, combining seafood from the surrounding waters with vegetables and carefully prepared fermented ingredients. Together, these facilities and experiences create an accommodation that sits somewhere between a historic ryokan, a private traditional residence, and a Japanese Zen Retreat, giving guests an opportunity to experience traditional Japanese hospitality within a comfortable and private setting.
Experiences, Activities and Shimabara Attractions at a Zen Meditation Retreat in Japan
An experience at a Zen Meditation Retreat in Japan is one that is centered on activities that encourage guests to slow down and engage with the culture and traditions, and appreciate nature and the natural world, and a stay at the Zen Retreat NAMI exemplifies this experience. The most significant activity is evening zazen at Gyokuho-ji, this neighbouring Zen temple is where guests can practice meditation under the guidance of a Buddhist monk. The experience is available to those who wish to participate and does not require previous meditation experience, making it accessible even to travelers who have never practiced zazen before. Morning yoga provides another opportunity to begin the day on the Shimabara Peninsula quietly. While a bodywork session during the stay allows guests to focus on relaxation and physical wellbeing. The property’s shoin-style tatami room also becomes the setting for a traditional tea ceremony on longer stays, allowing visitors to explore Japanese tea culture within an authentic historic environment rather than a modern recreation designed specifically for tourists. Culinary activities are another important part of the experience. Guests staying for two nights or more can participate in a shio-koji workshop, where they will learn about fermentation and will also prepare an ingredient that will later be incorporated into dinner. The retreat’s seasonal cuisine is closely connected to the surrounding region. Only seasonal vegetables and the freshest locally caught seafood are used to create meals that reflect the natural resources of Nagasaki. For travelers interested in Kyushu Ryokans, this emphasis on food, hospitality, culture and traditions shares with guests a deep sense of place, a cultural experience that is so much more than simply staying in a traditional-style room. Beyond the property, the Hayasaki Strait is immediately accessible and provides an impressive natural backdrop throughout the day. Guests can watch the sunrise over the water, sit quietly on the veranda or simply enjoy views towards Amakusa. Dolphin-watching boat trips can be arranged from the port directly in front of the property, offering an opportunity to see the marine life of the surrounding waters.
The Hayasaki Strait is home to Indo-Pacific bottlenose dolphins. The wider Shimabara Peninsula also provides opportunities to discover historic settlements, Buddhist and Christian heritage, coastal landscapes and local Japanese food culture. Visitors can spend part of their trip exploring the region before returning to the calm atmosphere of the retreat. However, the essence of this Japanese Zen Retreat is not necessarily the number of activities completed. Instead, it lies in the opportunity to experience ordinary moments with greater attention, be they drinking matcha, walking through the garden, listening to birds, watching the sea or sitting quietly at the neighbouring temple. The combination of a traditional Kominka House, Japanese cuisine, meditation, tea, yoga and coastal scenery make Zen Retreat NAMI an especially distinctive destination for travelers looking for a Japanese Zen Retreat experience that feels personal and culturally rooted.
Rather than presenting Japan as a destination that must be constantly explored, the retreat offers a different approach in which stillness itself becomes part of the journey. For visitors seeking a peaceful Zen Meditation Retreat in Japan or an intimate stay among the traditional Kyushu Ryokans, Zen Retreat NAMI provides a rare opportunity to experience the quieter traditions of Japan in a historic home beside a living Zen temple. Whole House Private Stay (1 unit)
Constructed over 100 years ago in the Meiji Period (1868 – 1926), this delightful property is a traditional Kominka house. Built by a timber merchant, the quality of the craftsmanship and the wood used, is second to none. Details throughout the house enhance the sense of place, from the hand painted, ‘fusuma doors’ of the Shoin-Zukuri Tatami room, painted by the head priest of the neighbouring temple, to the hand-blown glass in the house’s windows, and the Karesansui Garden that 2 tatami rooms (that also function as a bedroom, set with futon beds each evening) look out onto. The house shares a total space of 180sqm and features a Shoin-style tearoom, earthen floor counter, private dining room, and 2 bedrooms. One of the bedrooms is set with twin single beds, and the second bedroom converts 2 tatami rooms into a bedroom set every evening with futon beds in the traditional way. The rooms are air-conditioned, providing both cooling and heating as required. There are 2 bathrooms, 1 set with a shower only and another set with a bathtub. Please note that due to the traditional construction the house cannot accommodate disabled or wheelchair-bound guests due to the steps and tatami thresholds throughout the property. The stay at Zen Retreat NAMI is inclusive of dinner and breakfast.
