Perfectly placed to share the best of Indonesia’s Sumba Island with guests, Maringi Sumba is located in the northwest of the island, conveniently close to Tambolaka Airport and to the northwest beaches of Kita Beach. Set within more than 8 hectares of grounds the hotel includes 9 rooms, a restaurant, spa, swimming pool, yoga shala, organic farm and cultural experiences to share with guests. This Maringi hotel was designed to sit harmoniously alongside its natural surroundings. The architecture of Maringi Sumba has been constructed from locally sourced and sustainable materials, very much the building materials that have been used on the island by locals for generations. Built by local craftsmen, this Sumba hotel is both traditional and sustainable by design. In keeping with its eco resort credentials, Maringi Sumba is surrounded by nature and the unspoiled rural countryside of Sumba. Maringi’s approach to responsible tourism is to find a balance between its 6C’s, which are: Climate, Conservation, Circularity, Community, Culture, and Commerce. A part of the Sumba Hospitality Foundation, the hotel is where the students of the foundation put into practice all they have learned. Providing opportunity for Sumba’s youth to study and learn the skills they will need to embark on a career in the hospitality industry, Maringi Sumba is where these keen and enthusiastic students start their new careers. The joy, hope and enthusiasm is infectious, as these passionate young hospitality professionals care for the guests of Maringi Sumba. The students are all locals, all from the island and they are always keen to share the secrets and stories of their Sumba home with guests. These qualities and experiences are the signature of a boutique hotel experience, and Maringi Sumba has them in spades.

Your Host and The Team

“At Maringi Sumba, you’ll stay in the heart of Sumba Hospitality Foundation’s campus. Our staff is almost entirely made up of students. They work hard to build a future for themselves and a perfect holiday for you and your family. This unique experience makes us completely different from any other hotel you have ever stayed in.”

A Maringi Eco Resort with Boutique Hotel Comfort and 5-star Service

There has been no compromise in comfort in the creation of this Maringi eco resort, it offers all the comfort of a Sumba Island resort and boutique hotel while supporting and giving back to the local community. As a foundation, all profits from the operations of the hotel are poured straight back in to the foundation and its educational programs. The hospitality school is close to the hotel, within the same grounds, but with serenity and privacy assured for guests in the placement of the guest rooms. Offering 9 rooms, the Maringi Sumba hotel’s rooms are all independent pavilions, with 5 Bamboo Pavilions and 4 Pool Pavilions.

The Bamboo Pavilions are delightful bamboo structures, wooden floors, bamboo and stone walls, with a high peaked roof over an octagonal structure. The rounded oval windows and door add to the soft and natural look of the architecture. The Pool Pavilions are large bungalows of bamboo and stone, with tiled floors and overlooking the hotel’s swimming pool.

Maringi Sumba is where the students of the foundation cut their teeth with their newly learned hospitality skills so the attention to detail from the students is superlative in the way they care for and service the hotel’s guests. Additionally, Maringi Sumba has a full suite of services and facilities available to guests. The hotel’s spa offers a full range of treatments and massage including scrubs, facials, aromatherapy, hot stone, Swedish and Balinese massage. The restaurant bar and lounge serve breakfast, lunch and dinner rather than open all day. The kitchen team at Maringi Sumba offers traditional Balinese, Indonesian and Western cuisines, all crafted from fresh locally sourced ingredients. And much of the vegetables and herbs used in Maringi Sumba’s kitchens come straight from farm to table, from the hotel’s own organic farm and gardens.

“Purposeful and responsible travel have become the mantra, and goals, for many modern travellers, and the Maringi Sumba hotel exemplifies these qualities. Located in richly rural northwest Sumba, close to 3 beaches, guests of this joyful eco-resort are surrounded by natural beauty. Owned and managed by the Sumba Hospitality Foundation, this 9 room Maringi eco-resort is staffed by the foundation’s hospitality students. Every dollar spent by guests contributes directly towards the futures of Sumba’s youth who have taken the opportunity to embark on a career in hospitality here. Their joy and enthusiasm add a character to your stay that is uplifting and inspiring. ”
Kim, the discoverer.

We Care

At the Sumba Hospitality Foundation, we have our unique approach to “sustainability”. Instead of using this term, we prefer to use the “Ibu Bumi Philosophy”, which sums up our guiding principles for responsible care of Mother Earth. But how do we put this into practice? As an Affiliate member of the Long Run, all our projects integrate at least one of the 6 Cs: Climate, Conservation, Circular Economy, Community, Culture and Commerce. Find out how we tackle these issues.

Climate
We are facing a climate emergency. A confronting fact that we want our students, staff and guests to be aware of. The travel industry is a major contributor to greenhouse gas emissions, especially when travelling by air. As Sumba is a remote island, and getting here generates additional carbon emissions, SHF wants to ensure that every trip is meaningful, avoiding any additional negative impacts generated by the Foundation.

To further minimise our carbon emissions, SHF has 288 solar panels on-site, which provide the campus and hotel with renewable energy from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. every day.

Conservation
The Sumba Hospitality Foundation is located on an 8-hectare site. Over the years, we have succeeded in allowing the biodiversity to blossom from a single tree to a green oasis. Almost 3 hectares of the SHF campus is dedicated to the growth and nurturing of our permaculture garden. Nearly 1 tonne of fruits and vegetables are harvested monthly, served at Maringi’s Restaurant and Makan Dulu, and also incorporated into daily healthy meals for students and staff.

On the farm, we teach students organic farming methods that are designed for long-term sustainability. Traditionally, slash-and-burn farming has been practised on the island, which is one of the main causes of deforestation. By teaching students how to make natural fertiliser from food waste and old leaves, we will hopefully help to counteract this practice.

Circularity
“There is no such thing as waste” is a key belief at the Sumba Hospitality Foundation. This principle is nothing new for the local community. Traditionally they mastered using everything as a resource, not generating any waste. However, with the rise of imported goods on the island, namely plastic waste has become a big issue. The foundation is therefore aiming to become a circular entity which eliminates single-use plastics.

Community
Everything we do on Sumba is for and with the local community. We love the people of Sumba and we care for their needs. SHF is a close-knit community for which we wish to foster empowerment, emancipation, and change through collective action. It’s all about creating opportunities for growth and change through employment, education, crafts, farming, music, and so much more.

Culture
While the Foundation aims to prepare students for the world outside Sumba, they should always carry their culture with them wherever they may land. SHF therefore encourages students to share their stories and cultural heritage with guests from a perspective of empowerment, not pity.

Maringi Sumba incorporates several elements that are inherently Sumbanese: Ikat as decoration, local handicrafts, using bamboo for our buildings such as the traditional Sumba house for the guest check-in. In addition, all ceremonies (opening, closing and celebrations) are held in the presence of local government officials and Marapu priests in traditional dress, with dances and music.

Commerce
Staying in Maringi or having a meal in Makan Dulu is meaningful. To ensure the future of the Foundation, all the generated income is reinvested directly into our students and projects. We keep prices fair while ensuring that they can cover our operating costs.
