From Engineer to Eco Hotelier

Coming from an engineering background, the owner of Arumdalu Belitung, Pak Agus, had an ambitious dream for the property that he’s slowly but surely turning into reality – to create a zero-waste, eco-friendly and sustainable luxury resort.

When Pak Agus started envisioning the eco luxury resort Arumdalu in the least developed area of Belitung, there were no roads, electricity or expertise, however he held on to his dream of creating a sanctuary and system made with almost zero waste incorporating recycled and reclaimed materials, training local villagers to be our hospitality forerunners, developing cuisine based on local ingredients, cultivating a biodynamic farm, and developing local fishermen and farmers.

He used his background in engineering, to help create building materials and structures with new technologies that are authentic yet natural and beautiful at the same time and slowly but surely build the first and only eco luxury concept resort in Belitung. Today, the unique escape is not only a luxury eco resort but also part of a larger vision including cultivating innovative urban farms, producing cutting-edge building materials and more.

We Care

This private resort is fully committed to ensuring it maintains an eco-friendly environment without compromising a luxurious experience. Synthetic rattan furniture has been made with recycled plastic. Besides its stone walls, which were made with rubber waste and sand, and energy efficient LED lights, its wicker gazebo allows for a natural cooling system.

All of the resort’s wastewater is used to water the grounds. Arumdalu also takes unutilised heat energy from air conditioners to create hot water for bathing, and has a powerbank system that stores and converts other wasted energy. Meanwhile, its organic farm grows dragon fruit, flowers, herbs, vegetables, and other fruit, which is fertilised with native seaweed. In addition to its low carbon footprint, Arumdalu is dedicated to employing as many local people as possible. To further help community development, one of its projects, Rumah Pintar (Smart House) aims to empower locals by teaching them how to make traditional batik with patterns that are native to Belitung as well as traditional palm sugar making. Another teaches village people from Membalong business and entrepreneurship skills including hospitality, batik, pewter making, sustainable fishing, organic farming, culinary arts, proper water treatment, and more.
