The Asa Maia, Sanskrit for ‘hope beyond illusion’, encapsulates the mission of the owner to create an environment where guests are encouraged to unwind and indulge in unpretentious luxury, mindfulness, and wellness. This secluded adults-only health retreat provides sheltered privacy while being just minutes away from Uluwatu’s incomparable cliffs sandy creeks, day clubs, and cultural highlights. Connected by wooden walkways that snake through the shade of palm trees and lush tropical fauna, each wooden bungalow tells its own story by combining sophisticated design with traditional Balinese craftsmanship. Created from reclaimed century-old timber the elegant freestanding suites carved by hand are tastefully embellished with Indonesian art and artefacts. This incredible Bali yoga retreat center features 10 spacious high-end bungalows that fan out from a central pavilion. Relax in the saltwater infinity pool, indulge in the magical healing touch of the highly trained therapists in Asa Maia’s spa facility, and enjoy mouthwatering organic seasonal cuisine in the Asa Maia Restaurant.

The simple, elegant ambience of this first-class health and wellness retreat on Bali inspires composure, creativity, and connectivity between the mind and the body without pressuring guests into any unwelcome regimes or daily routines. From the moment visitors enter the impressive lobby they are transported away from the pressures of modern life and into a restful environment of one of the best wellness retreats Bali has to offer. Eco-responsibility and sustainable living are key mantras at the Asa Maia. Guests are encouraged to engage in the principles of improving the environment by using biodegradable bathroom amenities including bamboo toothbrushes, Sensatia Botanicals brand beauty products, and handmade organic Turkish towels and linen. The retreat center has never permitted single-use plastic and is proud to be involved in a range of initiatives, including regular beach clean-ups and projects to raise awareness about pollution and the unnecessary use of all things plastic – even the drink straws are edible.

Your Host and The Team

“The Asa Maia was a project of love. Something I was inspired to create as a result of personal health challenges. The process took years and involved trips throughout Indonesia to source local art and artifacts, reclaimed wood and other materials. Indonesia is made up of more than 14,000 islands, so the culture is very diverse, and I wanted to reflect that in the hotel. The more you learn about it, the richer your experience is. ”

One of the core features that sets The Asa Maia apart from other hotels is its 10 stand-alone reclaimed Javanese gladaks (traditional homes) that we painstakingly relocated and re-assembled atop the cliffs of Uluwatu. I took several trips to east Java to find the houses in their original location. I wanted to maintain the integrity of the original buildings and see where they were originally built. Marrying the best of both worlds, our verdant resort is secluded, yet in striking distance of Uluwatu’s blissful beaches and cliff-top day clubs. Our ten suites encircle an airy central pavilion that’s fanned by a saltwater pool, subterranean contrast therapy pools, fire pit and infrared sauna. Threaded by wooden walkways, the resort’s sinuous layout is a metaphor for the mantra of The Asa Maia: to help you forge new paths and build connectivity between the mind and body. Life moves at an unhurried pace here, so inhale, exhale and breathe in that Uluwatu energy.

Javanese Tradition and Modern Comfort at the Asa Maia

Carefully reassembled by local craftspeople, each of the Asa Maia’s 10 standalone suites is a reclaimed Gladak (traditional Javanese house). Martha Booke, the passionate vision behind the Asa Maia Uluwatu, scoured the countless Islands of Indonesia for the inspiration, reclaimed materials, and authentic artifacts required to reliably recreate the buildings of this wonderful Bali wellness retreat in a secluded tropical clifftop setting.

The eight Asa Maia Suites at this Uluwatu wellness retreat feature 40 sq ft of tranquil Javanese comfort. The unfussy decor is elegant in its simplicity. Modern unobtrusive amenities include a super king-sized bed, high ceilings, desk, sofa, Wi-Fi, aircon, coffee machine, and well-stocked minibar including Jamu – Indonesian herbal beverages and snacks. The large en-suite bathroom is stocked with Senatia Botanicals toiletries and the highlight of the ensuite bathroom, along with the indoor and outdoor rain showers, Turkish bath towels, and linen bathrobes has to be the free-standing copper bath or exquisite Belgian Bluestone tub (rescued from a Javanese railway station).

In addition to the 8 suites, the two Asa Maia Bali Studios are perfect for those seeking a more intimate experience. Each of the 2 studios has high ceilings and comfortable king-sized beds draped in quality linen and spacious bathrooms with rain showers and a range of complimentary biodegradable botanical bathing products.
All accommodation is beautifully lit and decorated with reverence for the traditional Javanese homes they have been created from. Hardwood floors, carefully curated artwork and artefacts, and spacious verandas and balconies make the Asa Maia the perfect choice for those seeking luxurious comfort and intimacy in one of the best health retreats in Bali. The commitment to wellness extends well beyond the accommodation at this Bali yoga retreat center which prides itself on providing a tranquil space in which to recharge and reconnect. The yoga retreat, while providing a sanctuary from the outside, is also within walking distance of Uluwatus’s more vibrant treats.

“Firmly focused on wellness, the Asa Maia is inspired by ancient Indonesian architecture providing 10 reclaimed free-standing Javanese houses set within lush tropical gardens. An adults-only oasis of wellness and relaxation hidden away atop the Uluwatu cliffs, this luxury retreat is unique among the best retreats in Bali for providing a complete range of therapies for the body and the mind. From its energizing hot and cold plunge pools to its invigorating infrared and Himalayan salt sauna and magnificent meditation and yoga studios, the Asa Maia stands out for its understated opulence, exquisite comfort and veneration for Javanese art, architecture and tradition.”
Kim, the discoverer.

Rejuvenate the Body and Mind at the Asa Maia Health and Wellness Retreat, Bali

The Asa Maia health and wellness retreat, Bali provides everything needed to reinvigorate body and soul. At the heart of the hotel is a 25m free-form saltwater swimming pool surrounded by sun loungers on ironwood decking reclaimed from a crumbling bridge in Borneo. The facility’s hot and cold plunge pools are almost unique among the wellness hotels on Bali and provide contrast therapy (a rapid heating and cooling of the body to promote healing and improve circulation) for those tempted to take a dip. Among the unlimited spa treatments on offer is the detoxifying infrared Himalayan salt sauna. An eco-friendly design that uses 90% less energy than a traditional sauna, the infrared carbon-jade stone and ceramic heaters warm you in such a way that you sweat at a lower temperature, and the hand-harvested Himalayan salt tiles charge the atmosphere with negative ions, known as ‘vitamins of the air’ giving you an altogether unique and deeply relaxing sauna experience.

The Asa Maia Spa offers the ultimate relief after a day in the ocean or exploring the island. The highly trained spa team at this unmissable wellness retreat on Bali provides all manner of customized treatments to relieve tension, improve circulation, and realign those chakras. All skill levels are welcome at the yoga shala. The space, created from reclaimed teak with a distinctive bamboo roof, echoes an ancient Javanese home and overlooks the lush island vegetation. The Asa Maia Gym is also available to guests 24 hours a day. Guests preferring to stimulate the mind can head to the library with its teak shelves packed with books and comfortable sofas on which to sink into with an inspiring tome and the Asa Maia Restaurant is the place to go to stimulate the taste buds with the kitchen teams’ tasty vegetarian and pescatarian menus. Your home from home in paradise, the Asa Maia has it all.
