Situated in the heart of Nubra Valley lies a garden oasis called Lchang Nang, Meaning “The House of Trees”, it is only a four hour drive from Leh. This hidden gem is a tranquil piece of heaven set amidst an orchard filled with elm, apricot and apple trees, alongside the Siachen River. Lchang Nang’s concept balances two elements: a commitment to the past by honoring traditional Ladakhi cultural elements, and a vision of a better future through eco-friendly tourism initiatives. The property is primarily powered through solar energy, which is plentiful in sunny Ladakh. Guests are served filtered glacial snowmelt for drinking and bathing, which drastically reduces its reliance on single use plastics.

Rigzin Wangtak Kalon
Your Host and The Team
“While I was away from my village, studying in different parts of India, I realised the uniqueness of my Ladakhi roots. I wanted to preserve the beauty of the culture and celebrate the ecology of Ladakh through Lchang Nang Retreat. The resort is situated in my village, and functions on a solar power. We grow our own food, milk our resident cows, and make our own energy. We also buy products from local villagers. Essentially, we seek to redefine luxury by giving a dose of sustainability and ecology.”

We Care

Lchang Nang Retreat wants to offer guests a unique experience in close connection to the environment. The retreat is powered by a solar grid and plastic containers are kept to a minimum. Some of the hotel’s green practices include: abundant replantation each spring; buying local or growing their own organic vegetables and herbs, using local materials in low impact construction like mud and rock walls or willow and poplar roofs; garbage segregation and recycling; and a careful use of fuel. All these help to keep the carbon footprint to a bare minimum. To further elaborate on the hotel’s attempt to be as eco-friendly as possible, the solar panels and battery bank generate 95% of their energy. They have 15 acres of grazing land, have a flood irrigation system to water the entire 20-acre property, use LED lighting for the cottages, use solar geysers for hot water, and use solar lamps for landscape lighting where needed. They use no plastic containers for their organic soaps, shampoo and moisturizers.
