BOOK

Dating back to the beginning of the last century and steeped in colonial tradition, the House of MG Ahmedabad is a lovingly restored property which stands out as one of the finest boutique hotels in Gujarat. Built by a wealthy textile magnate in 1924, the recently refurbished House of MG combines contemporary comfort with its original old-world charm to provide guests with a celebration of the warmest Gujarati hospitality, the tastiest local and international cuisine, and exceptional traditional craftsmanship throughout. Celebrated as the best place to stay in Ahmedabad by popular travel guides including Rough Guide and Lonely Planet, The House of MG Ahmedabad offers guests a choice of 37 beautifully appointed rooms and suites, luxury spa facilities, an indoor pool surrounded by a colorful hand-painted lotus fresco, fine dining on the terrace of the Agashiye House of MG restaurant, and the tastiest teas, coffees, and irresistible hand-churned ice creams in the Green House courtyard cafe. Scattered throughout are traditional textiles, handmade furnishings, and antiques adding a strong sense of the past.

The fact that this stately property was briefly the home of Mahatma Gandhi in 1915 after he returned from South Africa to fight for Indian Independence from the British adds to the property’s charm and makes it one of the truly unique hotels in Ahmedabad. The Mangaldas family, who own the House of MG Ahmedabad, take pride in the fact that the hotel welcomes guests as a part of the family. It is their belief that the property should feel like a home from home for everyone including children, single travelers, families, and the elderly. The House of MG is conveniently located in the heart of Ahmedabad, an incredible cosmopolitan hub pulsing with culture and tradition and a UNESCO World Heritage City.

Your Host and The Team

“The House of MG was built by one of Ahmedabad’s city Fathers and it wonderfully represents the colonial heritage architecture of the early 20th century, replete with courtyards and verandahs overflowing with greenery. The superbly restored property, now a wonderful Ahmedabad boutique hotel, has thirty-seven guest rooms and suites, and two hugely popular restaurants, and its truly unique features are a gallery showcasing traditional textiles, jewelry, and silver from the Mangaldas family collection and a special play section dedicated to children. It prides itself as a family, child, single lady traveller, and elderly-friendly hotel. Mahatma Gandhi was a guest in this property on his return from South Africa in 1915, which even then was staffed by locals from neighboring villages. ”

Today this property celebrates local craftsmanship and cuisine and embodies responsible tourism offering exceptional Gujarati hospitality in an ambiance that feels like home. This home and now heritage hotel was designed and built by local Gujarati craftsmen. Its restoration over the last two decades (and ongoing), is handcrafted. Every item of furniture and textile piece are handmade, primarily from repurposed material. Our restaurants serve slow-cooked and fresh food all crafted from the freshest seasonal ingredients. The majority of our staff are recruited from surrounding villages and our gift shop proudly sells artisanal products. Our hospitality mirrors how we treat guests in the Mangaldas family home. Hence, when you come to The House of MG, it feels like coming home!
