BOOK

A bijoux oasis in the heart of Gujarat’s historic city of Bhuj, the Bhuj House offers cozy homestay-style accommodation with a traditional Parsi welcome. This charming Bhuj heritage hotel dates back to the end of the 19th century and has been cared for by the Bhujwala family since its construction by Pestonji Sorabji Bhujwala in the 1890s. Recently renovated into one of the best places to stay in Bhuj, Bhuj House Homestay guests may choose from five Rooms overlooking a peaceful courtyard garden. Each room has been affectionately restored to the days of yesteryear when Queen Victoria was Empress and the British Raj was living side by side with the local Parsi families, with authentic local textiles, artworks, and antique furniture. The home stay in Bhuj is situated at the foot of Bhujia Hill and surrounded by centuries of history and culture. The Bhuj House Hotel is itself a celebration of the history of the area and much was discovered when the ancestral property suffered earthquake damage, and the required restoration after the earthquake helped Jehan Bhujwala and his family to fully appreciate and understand the property’s place and importance in the rich heritage of the town and its Parsi community. The family decided the best use for the renowned property would be as a Bhuj House homestay where visitors are welcome to share in the fascinating depictions of the family’s history and experiences in this unique and fascinating region of India. Must-see local attractions for those choosing to stay at one of the best hotels in Bhuj Gujarat include the royal palace and Shroff bazaar within the walls of the old city, the embroidery museum, and the ancient shipbuilding villages along the Rukmavati River. Wildlife enthusiasts should ask the staff at the Bhuj House about a trip to the Chhari Dhand Wetland Conservation Reserve where more than 320 species of indigenous and migrating birds are to be found all year round.

Your Hosts and The Team

“Kutch, where my ancestors settled in the late 19th century, is a fascinating region which I visited during childhood holidays, staying in our ancestral home. It was only when I began living there regularly with my wife and children—while working on a local wildlife conservation project—that we took on the major task of restoring our earthquake-damaged house with the vision of opening it as a heritage homestay. During this process, we unearthed much of our family history and realized that we were helping to preserve a fragment of Bhuj’s rich heritage—a time when the Parsi community thrived here. We also learned that while Bhuj is not a major tourist destination, it has long been a paradise for textile lovers. Our team takes great joy in hosting guests with a variety of interests and helping them to discover lesser-known treasures.”

Comfort Meets Tradition at the Bhuj House Homestay

Each of the five cozy rooms at the Bhuj House homestay has its own attractive design and reflects the long history and culture of Gujarat. Bapaiji’s room is a spacious twin that was once the residence of the family’s grandmother (Bapaiji is the Parsi Gujarati for grandmother). The room opens out onto the Bhuj House homestay’s tree-lined courtyard and has its own private verandah. Two single antique rosewood beds with canopies, an ensuite bathroom with a walk-in shower, air-conditioning, and Wi-Fi make this the ideal room for friends travelling in India together. The Agassi room, situated on the upper floor of this wonderful Bhuj heritage is reached via its own private spiral staircase. The accommodation is split into two rooms, the first featuring a queen-sized bed and the second with twin beds and a spacious en-suite bathroom making the Agassi, or ‘terrace’ rooms the perfect choice for a family or small group of friends travelling together. The Jafri rooms face onto the Bhuj homestay’s lush courtyard and feature a queen-sized double, large ensuite bathroom with walk-in shower, air-conditioning and Wi-Fi, and a single bed can be provided in the sunny day-room for an extra guest. The Nano room is compact, but perfectly proportioned, containing a queen-sized double bed, en-suite with a walk-in shower, air conditioning and Wi-Fi, as well as a private outside seating area that catches the morning sun. Rohee’s room is named after a prominent Bhuj House homestay family member and former resident. Two adjoining rooms provide an airy and spacious living space. The main room features a pair of single beds that can be converted into a comfortable double bed on request, a private bathroom with a walk-in shower, air conditioning and Wi-Fi. The second room can be used as an office/day room and contains a single bed so that it can be converted into a bedroom for an extra guest, making this room the ideal choice for a small family.

“A traditional heartfelt Gujarati welcome awaits guests of the Bhuj House Hotel. Once a bustling family home, the Bhujwala family have created a peaceful heritage homestay in the heart of busy Bhuj. Each of the five rooms has been carefully renovated to retain the authentic feel of this historic home which dates back to the 19th century. Enjoy the privacy of cozy rooms decorated in the region’s traditional fabrics and antique furniture and indulge in delicious local cuisine served around the table of the communal courtyard in the company of your fellow guests.”
Kim, the discoverer.

The Bhuj House, a Historical Home Stay in Bhuj

Lovingly restored with an attentive reverence for detail, the Bhuj House has a well-earned reputation for being the best place to stay in Bhuj. The five well-appointed rooms offer peace and privacy just minutes from the heart of the busy heritage town of Bhuj. However, homestays in Bhuj don’t come much homier than Bhuj House Hotel where guests are invited to gather together in the courtyard around a communal table for breakfast and dinner and get to know one another. A delicious menu of local Parsi recipes is crafted in a traditional kitchen and served al fresco beneath the sky in the Bhuj House courtyard garden. Dinner in the garden of the Bhuj homestay is the perfect way to end a day exploring the historic town and its labyrinth of narrow streets and alleys. Although damaged during the 2001 earthquake, the Aina Mahal remains a stunning example of 18th-century Indian architecture blended with a fascination for European design. Flocks of pelicans and flamingoes roost in the nearby Hamisar Lake and plenty of bargains are to be had by those staying at the home stay in Bhuj just beyond the palace walls in the bustling market. As well as an abundant textiles tradition, Kutch is celebrated for antique treasures such as silver and furniture all of which were shipped to foreign ports on board ships built along the Rukmavati River Estuary. The center of shipbuilding was the medieval town of Mandvi, and a day trip to the coast to see the beach builders in action can easily be arranged for you by the staff at the Bhuj house homestay or with assistance from the Secret Retreats Concierges. History buffs will very much enjoy exploring the excavations at Dholavira. This incredible UNESCO World Heritage Site dates back as far as 3000 BC and provides a glimpse into one of the world’s most ancient civilizations. Gujarat and Bhuj House has so much to offer the traveller that it is well worth contacting the Secret Retreats Concierges to have the India travel experts here help you plan and book a tailor-made travel itinerary that has been personalized just for you and your travelling family and friends, ensuring you an unforgettable Gujarat travel experience.
