BOOK

In the shadow of the Himalayas, with the beguiling Bhutan to the northwest, and the mysterious Nagaland to the southeast, sits Diphlu River Lodge, a shining star of Assam’s hospitality offerings. Set on the banks of the Diphlu River, a small tributary of the Brahmaputra River, one of India’s greatest rivers, the appropriately majestic surroundings are the perfect home for this well executed, and choice of Royals, boutique safari lodge. This wonderful Diphlu lodge is one of Assam’s best resorts, especially for wildlife lovers, as just across the river Diphlu from the lodge, lies the Kaziranga National Park. Located close to the western reaches of the national park, the Diphlu River Lodge is one of the best places to stay for travellers looking to safari in Kaziranga National Park. In fact, you would be in good company in choosing the Diphlu River Lodge as your safari lodge for a visit to Kaziranga National Park, as the lodge was the hotel of choice for the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge on their visit to Assam and Kaziranga in 2016. While comfort is guaranteed at this Diphlu river resort, the team and owners at the Diphlu River Resort take conservation and the preservation of their home environment very seriously. The lodge’s buildings have all been sited to make as little impact on the environment as possible, while sharing beautiful views with guests. Each cottage pays homage to its Assam roots in design and style, and locally sourced natural materials were used as much as possible in the construction of the lodge’s buildings. Thoughtful of the local community too, as this Diphlu lodge works closely with the people, walkways of bamboo have been set where paths pass farmland, so visitors and guests have no need to step on or trample the farmers’ crops. The lodge team also have their own organic farm, where they grow rice and a variety of vegetables, ensuring farm to table dining at Diphlu River Lodge.

Your Host and The Team

“In the 70’s where Diphlu River Lodge stands today, was once my father’s childhood home. It was the first lodge in northeast India catering to discerning guests (including ambassadors and movie stars) who came to learn about and enjoy the unique biodiversity of Kaziranga. It was my grandfather’s goal to build a home in the jungle that would be open for all guests who wished to experience Kaziranga. His wild heart had a deep-rooted love for nature and community, but it was forced to shut down during the political insurgency in the early 80’s. And so, my father in wanting to carry on my grandfather’s legacy built a new jungle home in Kaziranga (this time on stilts as the Brahmaputra river floods Kaziranga every year) that is open for the wild-spirited and lovers of nature. Diphlu Lodge embodies the same principles that we live by in celebrating the local heritage, its vernacular aesthetic, in involving the local community, re-wilding and training young and old alike in the importance of preserving natural habitats and most importantly, being a safari lodge that we personally take pride in.”

The Hotel of Choice when on Safari in Kaziranga National Park

If you are planning a safari in Kaziranga National Park, then look no further than the Diphlu River Lodge for a place to stay. We think this is the best resort in Kaziranga Assam and a ‘must stay’ for all nature and wildlife lovers. Comprising 12 cottages, each cottage comfortably sleeping up to 2 guests, the design of our Diphlu river resort reflects its Assamese cultural heritage. The cottages are all built on stilts, raised above ground, and constructed from a mix of concrete and natural, locally sourced, materials. The roofs are thatch, with fixtures and fittings made from bamboo and rattan. Furniture blends perfectly with the cottages’ interiors made as it is from hardwoods, rattan and water hyacinth. The cottage interiors are decorated with traditional Assamese fabrics and object d’art further adding to the strong sense of place shared with guests in a stay at Diphlu River Lodge. To ensure comfort for guests, all of the cottages are individually air-conditioned and set with private en-suite bathrooms with walk-in showers. There is no compromise in guest comfort or convenience at this Diphlu resort, all the cottages are fitted with beds set with top quality mattresses and dressed in luxurious bed linen. Minibars and in-room safes, tea coffee sets, comfortable seating areas within the rooms and a writing desk are also included in the cottages’ interior design. Diphlu lodge’s cottages also enjoy a veranda or balcony, set with chairs and a day bed, to sit and enjoy the views towards the river and national park. It is not unknown to see animals, including buffalo and even rhinoceros from the lodge, and over 57species of bird have been spotted visiting the lodge’s grounds with its 40 species of trees. And ever thoughtful of guest comfort, the cottages also have a deck at the rear with sun loungers looking out over the farmland. Produce from Diphlu River Lodge’s own organic farm is used in the lodge’s kitchen to prepare dishes to be served to guests in the restaurant, or Machan. Machan means ‘jungle platform’ and is a riverside elevated building with both air-conditioned and open-air dining and lounge areas. The perfect place to dine, or take a drink from the lodge’s full bar, or sit with friends old and new on the comfy sofas maybe around the open fire on cool winter evenings to swap your stories of the day. The elevated nature of the building also gives guests great views of the river and the Kaziranga National Park on the opposite bank. Diphlu River Lodge also has a spa offering a range of treatments and massage and a variety of cultural activities and excursions to share local and cultural experiences with guests. And perhaps the highlight of a stay at Diphlu River Lodge, the two times daily jeep safaris into Kaziranga National Park!

“Recognition and approval of the quality of a hotel stay do not come much higher than a Royal stay. Diphlu River Lodge played host to the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge a few short years ago, and the Royal couple enjoyed and cheered the lodge’s cultural and eco sensitivity as well as their excellent hospitality and unbeatable location for nature and wildlife lovers. The only problem with this kind of recognition is it can make a property so popular it gets difficult to book a stay. But with Secret Retreats on your team, we are sure we can get the perfect itinerary booked for you to take in this wonderful rustic luxe eco-lodge. Don’t miss out, contact us today!”

We Care

The team at the Diphlu River Lodge is a founding member of the Responsible Tourism Society of India. The Lodge team and owners believe strongly in the importance of responsible tourism and in giving back to the environment and local community.

- ABN Foundation
Diphlu’s ABN Foundation takes 5% from every room booked to put towards the cost of work to support and improve education, promote rural community development, and put actions in place to protect the environment. Examples of the foundation’s success include the building of a new tuition centre in West Bengal, renovation of a school near Kaziranga National Park, and the running of naturalist training programs in partnership with the World Wildlife Fund.

- Organic Farming
Diphlu River Lodge has its own organic farm where a variety of vegetables and rice are grown.

- Recycling
Grey water from the lodge is re-used for irrigation, and all organic waste from the kitchens is composted.

- Minimize Use of Single-Use Plastics
As part of Diphlu Lodge’s efforts to minimize the use of single-use plastics the team buy Kama Ayurveda toiletries in bulk and pour into re-usable wooden dispensers, use glass water bottles, and as much as possible use oxy-biodegradable plastics.

- Architecture and Interior Design
Diphlu Lodge’s overall design was inspired by a typical traditional Mising (an indigenous Assamese tribal people) village. The lodge’s buildings have all been built as much as possible from locally sourced natural materials including wood, bamboo and rattan. All of the hand-woven objects used with the lodge’s décor have been crafted by local weavers from neighbouring villages. The Lodge also has no fencing between its premises and Kaziranga National Park in order to maintain the long-established animal corridors.

- Staff
The majority of the team at Diphlu River Lodge have been employed from the local community. Staff are trained in-house, both in English language and hospitality skills. Their warm, friendly and gentle characters are certainly one of the outstanding qualities of a stay at the Diphlu River Lodge.

Diphlu River Lodge is a member of the Center for Responsible Travel (CREST) Worldwide.
