Welcome to Java
Experience incredible landscapes and the best of Java Indonesia with a Secret Retreats Java holiday. Nestled between the islands of Sumatra to the west and Bali to the east, Java is one of the most populated islands in the world and home to Indonesia’s largest city and capital, Jakarta. Formed almost entirely by volcanic activity, Java is also home to a tightly packed chain of volcanos that stretches from one end of the island to the other. Forty-five of the striking volcanoes are still considered active, adding to the intriguing island’s fertile and otherworldly vistas.
During the Dutch colonisation in the 17th century, coffee, rubber, tea and sugarcane farming practices were introduced to the island. Later in the 19th century, Javanese coffee became so popular worldwide that it led to coffee earning one of its numerous nicknames: “java.” Today, the island is divided into four separate provinces and two special regions, the largest three provinces being East Java, Central Java and West Java. Secret Retreats’ collection of central Java hotels and east Java hotels provide unique opportunities for intrepid travellers to experience and explore this amazing island first-hand while feeling completely pampered in the distinct comforts of a design-forward Java boutique hotel.
In an effort to be a part of the local family, MesaStila has been supporting and contributing to the community since its grand opening in 2004. Besides engaging employees from nearby villages and offering intensive hotel management training, it provides other aid. This includes regularly helping to clean nearby mosques in preparation for special occasions as well as collaborating with others
to showcase Javanese culture with traditional dance shows, gamelan performances and batik lessons, which are held every afternoon at the hotel.
Upon their departure, guests are encouraged to leave any small spare change at the Front Desk. Every six months, all of the money collected is donated to nearby orphanages, and other places within the local community that desperately need assistance.
“Offering distinctive traditional Javanese hospitality and a Hamman spa, these large Joglo wooden houses adorned with antiques are set in a coffee plantation overlooking eight beautiful mountains in Central Java.”
