In the Footsteps of Genghis Khan and the Mongol Empire

From the steppe, he united the Mongol tribes before building an empire that would eventually stretch across much of Asia and into Europe. The landscapes around the ancient Mongolian capital of Kharkhorin (Karakorum) provide an opportunity to explore this extraordinary chapter of history. Established by Ögedei Khan in the thirteenth century, Karakorum became the political centre of the Mongol Empire before the imperial capital was later moved to Khanbaliq, present-day Beijing. The archaeological remains and surrounding landscapes offer insight into the scale of the Mongol world and the importance of the steppe in its formation. The nearby Erdene Zuu Monastery, built in the sixteenth century using stones from the former imperial capital, adds another important layer of Mongolian history and Buddhist heritage.
