BOOK

Journey to the Yangon of yesteryear at the Governor’s Residence Rangoon, where colonial style and sophistication pair seamlessly with all the modern comfort a 21st-century traveller appreciates. Situated a short stroll from the banks of the river, and a stone’s throw from the sacred Shwedagon Pagoda, in the heart of the old city’s peaceful embassy district, Yangon Governor's Residence Hotel dates back to the 1920s when it was home to the governor of the Kayak State and his family, which explains the name. Formerly known as the Belmond Governor’s Residence, the property is now locally and independently managed and owned by a home-grown Myanmar-based group of hoteliers who are now a valued member of the Secret Retreats community of curated hotels and travel experiences in Asia. The imposing two-story teak mansion has since been fully restored and is now one of the finest heritage hotels Yangon has to offer. A stunning mix of Burmese and colonial styles, this handsome Yangon boutique hotel contains forty-nine spacious rooms and suites hidden away from the hustle and bustle of the city with views over well-kept gardens containing a lotus pond, peacocks, and a sweeping fan-shaped swimming pool. The onsite Palette & Palate restaurant offers a tasty menu of Burmese and European cuisine created from fresh from farm to table, locally sourced ingredients, set in interior and exterior art-inspired elegance, and the Monkey Bar serves up a tasty mix of cocktails and finger foods in a less formal, yet sophisticated, tropical garden setting. The Yangon Governor's Residence also provides guests with rejuvenation for the body in a well-appointed spa, and inspiration and relaxation for the mind from a well-stocked library. With hardwood floors and intricately carved teak furniture throughout, Yangon Governor's Residence Hotel is a magical oasis in the heart of Myanmar's largest, most vibrant city.

Your Host and The Team

“The purpose of Governor’s Residence is to immerse guests in the timeless elegance of Myanmar’s colonial past while embracing the warmth and charm of its present. Originally a 1920s teak mansion, once home to British governors and Kayah High Princes, our retreat is a sanctuary of tranquility in the heart of Yangon’s diplomatic quarter. Nestled among lotus ponds and lush gardens, it is a place where each detail reflects the grace of Burmese hospitality - from our cuisine, to our peacocks that grace our gardens, and all way to the deep passion we have in caring for our guests. ”

I take great joy in sharing the magic of this hidden gem—whether it’s a slow breakfast beneath century-old trees, a quiet afternoon by our Spanish-tiled pool, or a journey through Yangon’s golden pagodas. Just like all hosts in Secret Retreats, I believe in creating experiences that are intimate, authentic, and unforgettable—where guests don’t just visit but truly feel the soul of Myanmar.
