BOOK

Zero Waste Village Thailand is set on the unspoiled western coastline of Koh Phangan, an island long known for its spiritual energy, secret beaches, and lush ad natural tropical landscapes that feel far removed from the mass tourism found on other islands in the Gulf of Thailand, unspoiled can still be found easily on Koh Phangan. Unlike the party-focused reputation that once defined parts of the island, the western side of Koh Phangan reveals a slower perhaps more bohemian lifestyle, where the rhythm of life follows nature’s way, where jungle-covered hills descend gently into the sea and small fishing communities live their lives as they have done for generations. While Zero Waste Village might be easily considered as one of Thailand’s eco friendly beach resorts, the property was not conceived as a conventional holiday resort but as more of a homestay and a living expression of Thailand’s sustainable tourism, with the goal being to blend architecture, nature, and community into a single, harmonious environment. Built into a secluded bay and surrounded by dense vegetation, the property feels intentionally hidden, offering guests a sense of discovery and privacy that is increasingly rare in many of the popular Thai destinations. That being said, guests can enjoy the beach and coral in front of the resort or enjoy the secluded and often empty beaches just to the north and south of the Zero Waste Village. For guests who prefer a pool to bathing in the sea, Zero Waste Village has a delightful spring-water pool set within a tropical garden. Every structure has been designed to coexist with the landscape and sit within it rather than to dominate it, and in so doing the team behind Zero Waste Village Thailand have really created an atmosphere where luxury is defined by space, silence, and connection rather than excess. As a sustainable beach resort, the Zero Waste Village reflects the growing movement toward eco-friendly beach resorts in Thailand, appealing to the growing number of travelers and holiday makers who seek authenticity and environmental responsibility alongside comfort and a place to enjoy their annual vacation. The island of Koh Phangan itself enhances this experience, with its reputation for yoga retreats, holistic living, and mindful and responsible travel aligning naturally with the ethos of the community behind the Zero Waste Village. The destination becomes more than a backdrop; it is an integral part of the stay, encouraging guests to slow down, observe natural cycles, and engage with the island on a deeper level. It is a great place to add into your Thailand travel itinerary designed by the Asia Experts, Secret Retreats. This approach positions the property as a benchmark for sustainable beach resort development, demonstrating how thoughtful design and ethical practices can elevate and enrich both the guest experience and that of the surrounding community with which the guests, and the property, engage.

Your Host and The Team

“We envisioned a home reflecting our values, surrounded by natural textures and local craftsmanship. Traveling through Thailand, we met artisans who inspired us. In Isan, North-eastern Thailand, we learned how folks extracted dyes from leaves and bark and used this to dye their handspun fabrics. These fabrics we have used on our cushions and to decorate our walls. In Phattalung, wooden sculptures doubled as fishing contraptions inspired our structures. In Trang, villages used every part of the palm tree to create rugs, baskets and furniture. So much inspiration for our Zero Waste philosophy.”

We built the Zero Waste Village with locally sourced materials, and the design of the property has incorporated the extant trees and rocks into the structure, to tread as softly as possible in the environment where we have set our home. We shared our vision with young Thai architects and designed spaces that are open to the sound of nature and the sea breezes. When COVID-19 hit, we supported struggling construction communities, offering jobs and training. Connecting with local families and artisans, we realised the importance of supporting these all too often overlooked communities.

Our home is a collection of bamboo and wooden structures, all crafted from regenerative materials. Interior details spark curiosity, showcasing the elegance and simple beauty of natural materials. Nothing in our village was made in a factory or bought in a shop. We hope you’ll sense the hands that crafted this space, and the comfort it brings us, and hopefully you too. We operate on a 100% non-profit basis. All the proceeds go to sustain and expand our mission. This project brought together makers, architects, artisans and artists, all working together communally, sharing knowledge and skills, creating something special that we want to share with you too.

The Guestrooms at Zero Waste Village Thailand an Eco Resort on Koh Phangan

The guestrooms and accommodation choices at this eco resort on Koh Phangan is intentionally limited to keep the focus on the quality of the guest experience, and to ensure privacy, and immersion in nature. The 3 rooms (sleeping a maximum of 6 guests across the 3 rooms) at Zero Waste Village Thailand are housed in artfully and sustainably crafted separate bamboo structures, each one feels more like your own individual sanctuary rather than a traditional hotel accommodation. The design is one that allows guests to experience a strong sense of personal space while remaining connected to the shared and communal areas of the resort. Locally sourced and sustainably farmed natural materials dominate the interiors, from the bamboo structure to the handwoven textiles to reclaimed wood furnishings, all combine to create a tactile warmth that contrasts with the minimalist elegance of the design. Beds are fitted with organic Thai latex mattresses that prioritize comfort and wellbeing, reflecting the village’s holistic approach to rest and recovery while still aligning with and supporting the ethos of sustainable travel in Thailand. Some rooms are air-conditioned, while others are open to the sea breeze, so guest comfort is assured whatever the weather, allowing guests to choose between air-conditioning or a more natural, elemental sleeping experience. Mosquito nets, large windows, and outdoor living areas blur the boundary between inside spaces and outside spaces, altogether reinforcing the feeling of being part of the surrounding ecosystem. Bathrooms are designed as walk-in spaces that emphasize light, airflow, and natural textures, further distancing the experience from conventional resort aesthetics. The layout of the rooms follows the contours of the land, with the structure built around and within rather than simply ‘on’ to preserve the existing trees and rock formations and reinforcing the principles of truly eco-friendly beach resorts. Rather than standard daily turnover, the accommodation is available as a private rental, fostering a sense of home and shared responsibility among families or groups of friends travelling together. This thoughtful approach to design and capacity ensures that the village remains intimate and low impact, aligning with the broader goals of sustainable travel in Thailand while offering a grounded yet comfortable stay experience with a strong, and natural, sense of place.

“Eco-luxe living at the Zero Waste Village, Koh Phangan. Sustainably and responsibly built and managed this unique and homely eco-resort is a shining light in sustainable travel and living. A stay here will promote well being in you and the community that your stay supports, comfort and privacy assured in an unspoiled tropical Thailand paradise. Here you will unwind as you connect with the beautifully natural surroundings, returning to the source of what is truly meaningful in life and travel. ”
Kim, the discoverer.

Sustainable Travel Thailand comes to life at Zero Waste Village Thailand

Sustainable travel Thailand comes to life at Zero Waste Village Thailand, through a diverse range of activities that invite and encourage guests to participate, learn new skills, and connect with the team and local community of the Zero Waste Village. Daily life here offers lots of opportunities to guests to engage with traditional island crafts such as coconut leaf weaving, natural dyeing, and working with bamboo, one of nature’s greatest and most versatile building materials. All of the activities and experiences are expertly guided by local artisans who share the skills that they have learned from family, skills that have passed down to them through the generations. These experiences transform simple materials into meaningful objects, reinforcing the philosophy that nothing is wasted, Zero Waste, and everything has value. For those drawn to the sea, the surrounding waters provide chances for squid fishing, beach picnics, and gentle exploration of coral-rich shorelines, often followed by meals prepared with the day’s catch. Inland, guests can take part in composting sessions, tree planting, managing organic water systems, or garden work, gaining first-hand insight into how sustainable systems function in a practical real-world setting. Staying at an eco-resort on Koh Phangan itself expands the range of possibilities, with nearby beaches, walking trails, and local markets also offering authentic glimpses into island life beyond the resort. Wellness is also an important component of the ethos behind Zero Waste Village Thailand, and mindfulness sessions, creative workshops, and moments of quiet reflection are woven naturally into the stay experience. Rather than a fixed schedule, activities are flexible and responsive to the interests of guests and the rhythms of nature, reinforcing the idea that sustainable tourism is as much about mindset as it is about practice. Through these experiences, the village demonstrates how eco-friendly beach resorts can foster meaningful cultural exchange, environmental awareness, and personal growth. Guests leave not only rested but inspired, carrying forward a deeper understanding of Thailand’s sustainable tourism and the role conscious travel can play in preserving places like Koh Phangan for future generations for the benefit of us all.

We Care

We embrace an old style of island living, seeking to waste little, to use traditional materials, to consume seasonal and indigenous foods, grown organically and harvested consciously. We protect our island, honouring the rich beauty of its nature and its waters. We explore traditional crafts and we recognise their sustainability and wisdom. Almost everything in our village was made by hand. If something breaks, we repair it. If we can't save it, we find away to give it a new upcycled life. We call this luxury. A story in every object.
We compost all the peels and skins of fruits and vegetables back into our soil. We maintain pollinator zones to help the bees, birds and bats do their essential work for our ecosystem. We are fully solar so that our vehicles and tools, cookers, fridges, pumps and filters are sun powered and do not add to pollution in Thailand.
We hope to reduce our footprint on this planet by encouraging organic farming and purchasing from farmers, fisherfolk and artisans who eke out an income from their intricate crafts. We use weeds for natural dyes and herbs and help to protect sea creatures with daily beach clean ups. We are committed to building a community of eco builders and artisans who are comfortable sharing knowledge, resources and tools to support each other. We host workshops where locals can share their eco passions and educate us about their traditions and participate in preserving this tiny piece of the planet that we have found ourselves stewards of. We run an Eco-sharing program where community members share knowledge, skills and make craft from found objects in nature, following a zero waste, zero-kilometre methodology.
Ours is a working village, but it lies in one of the last remaining truly private coves in the west coast of Koh Phangan. At special times, it can be freed up and enjoyed in private.
