Founded by American-born architect and founder of Silolona Sojourns, Patti Seery, who is based in Indonesia, Patti became involved with the Asmat and Dani Tribes of Papua 30 years ago, and actively acts as a liaison between these fascinating yet vanishing cultures and leading institutions of cultural preservation such as The Smithsonian, The Field Museum, and The Art Institute of Chicago. She continues to take great pride in safeguarding the rich traditions and customs of Indonesia’s many ethnic groups across the archipelago.
As a member of The Indo-Pacific Conservation Alliance (IPCA), a non-profit biodiversity organisation focusing on Indonesia and Papua New Guinea, Silolona Sojourns has long supported field projects in these regions. In recent years, this commitment has strengthened through partnerships with Conservation International’s Bird’s Head Seascape initiative, supporting marine research and new reef fish discoveries, and through ongoing collaboration with Misool Foundation, contributing to the protection of the Raja Ampat marine park. Silolona Sojourns is also a proud supporter of ReShark / StAR Project, participating in the global effort to rewild leopard sharks in Indonesian waters, and continues to work with Shawn Heinrichs (Only One / Racing Extinction) to raise awareness for ocean protection.
Cultural preservation remains a cornerstone of Silolona Sojourns’ mission. Alongside sustained support for Yayasan Toraja Melo, which revitalises indigenous weaving traditions among women artisans in Sulawesi, and PEKKA in Flores, empowering women-headed households, Silolona Sojourns also supports Sanggar Alam Serang Dakko in Makassar, an initiative dedicated to preserving traditional music, dance, and local cultural education. In its daily operations, Silolona Sojourns upholds sustainable practices through the careful sourcing of materials and respect for traditional craftsmanship. Wood used in vessel construction is sourced directly from community landowners in Kalimantan, while reclaimed teak from historical Dutch warehouses is repurposed to honour heritage and reduce waste. Additionally, vessels such as Si Datu Bua are equipped with fully functional sails to reduce fuel dependency and minimise environmental impact.
