How Indonesia’s Arumdalu Resort Serves Farm Fresh Meals Everyday
Making an effort to take time out of our busy lives and appreciate the moment doesn’t just pertain to our schedules, surroundings or reliance on technology but extends to our food as well. While the convenience of grabbing a cheap, quick bite is obvious, the toll fast food takes on our health and planet are often more hidden.
Naturally, eating more fresh, organic and local foods is better for our health and environment as they help limit the toxins we put into our bodies, into the Earth and into the air. The concept is simple, but following it isn’t always that easy.
Arumdalu Resort on Belitung Island in Indonesia is taking sustainable and organic food to a whole new level in their luxury eco resort, making it simple for guests to enjoy the good life and slow food. While other hotels and resorts may make efforts to source locally grown or organic ingredients, Arumdalu is growing what they use from scratch through a collection of urban farms and greenhouses located in the area and through the country.
In fact, Arumdalu’s focus on food came first with the resort second. More than a decade before Arumdalu Resort was born, the founder Pak Agus was researching different methods of organic farming, local gardening, construction and eco technology and then built the resort to put all these practices to use.
Today, in order to provide food in Arumdalu Resort, they’ve developed special zones throughout the area to cultivate local flowers, fruits, herbs, and vegetables, including a 2-hectare dragon fruit plantation that uses special seaweed fertiliser from the Belitung Sea to create a unique sense of umami in the ripe fruit. These local delicacies, along with fresh seafood and organic urban farm products, fuse together to create innovative dishes at the resort’s Sahang Beachfront Resto featuring international cuisines that best showcase the ingredients and capture one’s senses.
Placing importance on environmentally friendly food production and produce is not simply a preference, but a lifestyle. All around the world, food serves as the basis for all aspects of life. With this in mind, Albert, Pak Agus’ son, founded the Slow Food Youth Network in Indonesia, which is part of the global Slow Food organisation dedicated to preventing the disappearance of local food cultures and counteracting the rise of fast life.
A truly eco-friendly property committed to sustainability, Arumdalu Resort takes its green practices beyond the greenhouse making sure to use green processes and materials whenever possible – from LED lighting to a specially created gazebo crafted from recycled rattan wicker – for a sensational, and sustainable, experience.
