Away from the tourist crowds, Koh Phra Thong is a barely inhabited and gloriously unspoilt remote island. Backing onto a pristine nature reserve, and fringed by coconut plantations, Golden Buddha Beach Resort comprises 28 privately owned traditional wooden homes, which are sprinkled along the shoreline with a sheltered bay, and a beautiful and deserted 12 kilometre beach.

Hotel Facilities & Highlights

Tropical massage and spa treatments are available at the spa sala, facing the ocean.

The kitchen serves seasonal local ingredients, from the island of the daily food market in Kuraburi. The resort breeds its own chickens, ducks and pigs to supply the kitchen in eggs and meat. Fish and crustaceans are bought to the local fishermen. The chef serves mainly Thai food, with some western options on the menu. The menu changes every day.

Miles of sandy beach facing the Andaman Sea on one side of the hotel, turquoise water bay on the other side.

Ko Phra Thong Island offers wide expanses of savannah dotted with trees, tropical forest, tidal rivers and the ocean, so naturally it is a perfect habitat for birds. Over 100 different species were recorded - rare species such as the Asian open-billed stork, lesser adjutant, Indian roller and brown fish owl. The island is a paradise for bird watchers.

Votre hôte et l'équipe

“So many peaceful places in Thailand and elsewhere have become too overrun by tourists. Not here. Our mission is to preserve what has become a rarity—an unspoilt island far away from it all with privately owned houses by the sea, where time seems to have stopped.”

Valérie, the "three seas" spirit of adventures...

Valérie Blouin was brought up in Britany, the western part of France well known for its navigators and privateers, sailing through the Atlantic ocean. University graduate in politics and history, she then decided to enter in the business world and crossed the Channel to reach Great Britain, a nation famous for its Navy; she stayed in London for 30 years, pursuing a career in marketing research, journalism and more recently digital marketing. Eventually, the company was successful and sold: Valérie and one colleague, Jochen Morstaff went on sabbatical period and decided to travel to Asia; they discovered Thailand and its southern seashores and islands. In 2012, both were lured by the Island of Koh Phra Thong, on the Andaman coast, stretching on about 15km, and in this small "corner" of the Indian ocean, they found a paradisiac natural setting, and an existing but rustic resort in decline and available for sale. A vision flash occurred and, within a few days, they signed the purchase agreement, bought in partnership and decided to set for a new life.

The challenge was high: no electricity, no drinking water, poor staff coming from the mainland... keeping simplicity while improving basic comfort, facilities and equipment, beautifying the architectural style, introducing in the service the spirit of care and the refinements traits inherent to Thai society came high on the agenda and above all, training and relying solely on the local community for caring, crafting and cooking; a new model of "natural luxury" and self-reliant resort was born, with a collection of 29 villas shadowed by trees and 12km of empty beaches and serviced by a permanent staff of islanders of 30 or more during high season. Notwithstanding, success was not to be taken for granted; remote as it is, with a rather uneasy access, and a specific climate which make the resort available only from November to April, it took four years of struggle with a solid and enlightened management before the name gains acceptance and international renown: Valérie says " To succeed here, you have to like difficulties, you must be an everyday fighter…"

The greater part of her clientèle comes from Europe and is accounting for selective travellers, often urban and in search of a peaceful and remote paradise; cocooning (yoga and traditional massage), contact with local community, participation to workshops and local cooking lessons, or quiet contemplation of the natural landscape and animal life chase the stress of crowded city life and revive their inner soul. As a result, many clients come back and the occupancy rate is high, so advance booking is recommended, in particular because the monsoon does not enable full year stay. From the cradle of Atlantic to the Channel then to the Andaman sea, Valérie has completed her dreams and will share her spirit of adventures with you.

Durabilité

This resort practices sustainable tourism by minimizing waste and its environmental impact. It recycles all their glass, cardboard, paper, and cans, and only offers draft beer and non-bottled water. The resort has no freezers, and all food is delivered fresh daily from the market or purchased directly from local fishermen and farmers. In addition to its organic gardens, the resort has a nursery where they grow fresh herbs and vegetables. Food waste is collected to feed pigs and chickens, to produce compost for the gardens, and branches and leaves are used to create mulch.

90% of Golden Buddha Beach Resort’s staff comes from the island. Every employee is paid fair wages and receives good benefits. Additionally, the resort is very active within the local community, and is also currently working with the island’s authorities to set up micro loans for farmers to produce organic eggs and chickens.

“Facing the Indian Ocean and set along a remote 12 kilometre beach, this very secretly hidden eco-retreat situated on a remote island in the Andaman offers the opportunity to enjoy nature and the sea in a simple, authentic setting. Check the Ceramic Workshop.”

Kim, the discoverer.
