Sebangau National Park, Orangutans & Katingan River

- A Secret Retreats journey -

Chimpanzees, gorillas, orangutans have been living for hundreds of thousands of years in their forest, living fantastic lives, never overpopulating, never destroying the forest. I would say that they have been in a way more successful than us as far as being in harmony with the environment.
– Jane Goodall

Come and explore a new destination and a different river and venture into the dense forest that is the Sebangau National Park, famous as a refuge for the largest remaining population of wild orangutans on Borneo. Following one of the longest rivers in central Kalimantan, the Katingan river, we will experience life along its banks, witnessing the unique traditions and culture of the local people before exploring the mazes of black water lakes that finally lead us into the forest where we will overnight in comfortable lodges and enjoy a night-time wildlife walk.

Photo: Gaye and Lorna had that simple and magic idea to build a traditional boat that would both be an attraction and would transport guests to visit rare and beautiful forest environments and visit villages within the heart of Kalimantan.

Highlights of the Journey:

  • Watching the orang-utans on the Rungan river islands.
  • Trekking in the Sebangau National Park to track wild orangutans, and place a camera trap to spot the elusive clouded leopard.
  • Birdwatching and spotting and watching the proboscis monkeys.
  • Meeting local jungle tribes and visiting their villages.

The tour starts and finishes in Palangka Raya, Central Kalimantan.

4 nights / 5 days in Kalimantan
Starting price 1,250USD / person (based on 2people sharing the main cabin; additional 3 extra guests possible at 625USD each)

Day 1: Palangkaraya – Orangutan Island – Bukit Batu - Jahanjang

On arrival in Palangka Raya, we pick you up from the airport in our air-conditioned private car.

From here we travel to Nyaru Menteng and board a simple local canoe to visit the beautiful orangutan island, home to rehabilitated orangutans prior to their release into the wild managed by The Borneo Orangutan Survival Foundation that we support. We watch from a distance that will not disturb this process as they adapt to the natural forest environment of the island. On our return, we visit the foundation’s education centre and then take lunch in a forest gazebo before returning to the cars for a 40-minute ride to the rocky outcrop known as Bukit Batu.

An easy scramble over the rocks gives a 360-degree view of the vast surrounding landscape. A final drive of 2 hours gets us downstream to Jahanjang on the Katingan River. Here we board the Ruhui Rahayu for a welcome drink and snack as the boat heads upstream to a quiet location on the river.

Enjoy sunset on the river followed by dinner.

Overnight on-board the Ruhui Rahayu

Day 2: Sebangau National Park

Early morning, we visit the village of Jahanjang and take the opportunity to walk to the beautiful, calm lake behind the village and take a short paddle in a canoe into the perfect reflections. We then take a stroll through the village to meet the local people and learn about their lifestyle.

Returning to the Ruhui Rahayu we set off downstream to the mouth of the small Punggu Alas river and the beginning of our forest adventure. Pack your bags for an overnight in the forest lodge and enjoy a lunch on-board before transferring to smaller canoes to glide along the forest canals to the forest lodge, a journey of about 25minutes. On arrival at the WWF research and information site we settle in to our forest lodges, with each lodge accommodating 2 to 3 people.

Make yourself at home. We will have a short presentation on the research centre activities and achievements and then we will take a stroll around the camp and venture along the board walks deep into the forest keeping an eye and ear out for the wildlife. After dinner at the lodge we set off on an exciting guided night-time wildlife spotting expedition – we’ll be looking for the elusive clouded leopard and setting camera traps during the walk.

Overnight in a jungle lodge.

Day 3: Telaga – Sungei Klaru

After breakfast, we check the camera traps for evidence of the shy ‘ghost’ leopard, as it is known here before boarding the canoes for a trip upstream to Panggu Alas lake. Winding through the dense forest, we return to the boat for lunch and a short cruise to Telaga and join the nearby Klaru river.

Within Katingan Project forest rehabilitation area, we learn more about their REDD+ project. In the evening we quietly cruise upstream to a site to watch birds, proboscis monkeys and a variety of other wildlife. As the sun sets, we enjoy our final night in this unique wetland environment.

Overnight on board the Ruhui Rahayu.

Day 4: Jahanjang – Palangka Raya

Up at dawn for a wildlife experience on the boat as we cruise deeper along the Klaru river marvelling at the perfect reflections and keeping watch for birds and wildlife.

Our last lunch on-board as the boat returns to Jahanjang port to meet the transfer cars for the 4 hour journey back to Palangka Raya, and a comfortable room in the Swiss Belhotel.

Overnight in the Swiss Belhotel, Palangka Raya
