This magical region has long been one of the go-to\nchoices for Hollywood filmmakers thanks to its distinctive character, its kaleidoscope\nof cultures, and an extraordinary variety of stunning scenery both natural and\nman-made that make for a wonderful stage for any form of celluloid, moving and\nstill.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Whether you\u2019re a spontaneous adventurer, a luxury traveller,\nor a culture and experience junky, Asia offers so much variety. This\nfascinating continent has a backdrop to match almost every story with movie\nmakers and artists long taking advantage of this theatre of every-life. While\nwe are getting ready for the borders to reopen, I am pleased to share with you our\npick of the Hollywood movies made in Asia. LARA CROFT: TOMB RAIDER (2001)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Siem Reap – Cambodia <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2018Ta Prohm\u2019 is an enigmatic 12th<\/sup> century Hindu\ntemple immersed in the jungles that surround Angkor Wat that was made more\niconic (if that were possible) through its use as a setting for the movie \u201cTomb\nRaider\u201d. Here the heroine of this action-packed movie, played by Angelina Jolie,\nbattled the Illuminati for possession of an ancient talisman.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tomb Raider was based on the video game of the same name and\nis the story of an aristocratic English adventurer called Lara Croft, and her escapades\nsearching for antiquities. The first film shot in Cambodia since Peter O’Toole\nplayed Lord Jim in the shadow of Angkor Wat in 1964, much of the action was set\nin the temple complex of Angkor Wat. The movie led to huge tourist interest in\nAngkor Wat particularly in the photogenic Ta Prohm temple, now famed for the image\nof the gigantic Banyan tree that envelops and entwines the temple ruins. It\u2019s\nbeen almost 20 years since the first Tomb Raider film, but Angkor Wat, and Ta\nProhm specifically, still attract the crowds looking for that perfect Hollywood\nInsta-moment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

THE BEACH (2000)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Krabi – Southern Thailand<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Beach was filmed on the Thai island of Phi Phi Leh, an\nisland of the Phi Phi archipelago located in the Andaman Sea. It is the story\nof a young backpacker, played by Leonardo de Caprio, who arriving in Thailand\nlearns about a pristine tropical island where a group of backpackers have\nfounded their own isolated community to hide away from the world and live off\nthe grid on their own paradise island. The story set on Phi Phi Leh\u2019s stunning\nMaya Beach twists and turns into a dark contemporary version of Lord of the\nFlies. Ironically, considering the theme of the movie, the cult success of the\nfilm led to a wave of tourists rushing to the scenic location where the extreme\novercrowding and resulting environmental damage led to the Thai authorities closing\nMaya Beach to tourists. Isolation set and sanctioned by authority and paradise\nseeking backpackers and tourists denied access. A victim of its own success you\nmight say.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The backdrop to the movie is picture postcard perfect, the\nislands of the Phi Phi Archipelago really are stunning, even without access to\nMaya Bay this region of Thailand is not to be missed. And the diving and\nsnorkeling here is also incredible, helped no doubt by the closure of Maya Bay\nwhich has allowed the delicate coral ecosystems to renew (helped with more than\n10,000corals being replanted) and reef biomass to increase with the return of many\nspecies of fish including Black Tip Reef Sharks which had not been seen in the\nwaters around Maya Bay for many years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Thai authorities plan to reopen Maya Bay to tourism in\nmid-2021 and a ticketing system will be put in place to limit the number of\ndaily visitors to no more than 1,200, compared to what was more than 5,000 a\nday previously, which led to the environmental damage and the decision to close\nthe bay in 2018.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

HANGOVER II (2011)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bangkok – Thailand<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now let us hop over to the busy, sleepless, beating heart of\nThailand. The second of this comedy film trilogy sees the hapless wolf-pack head\nto Thailand for a wedding and after what should have been a calm, quiet\npre-wedding brunch they find themselves frantically trying to retrace their\nsteps through the streets of Bangkok to find a soon-to-be-married groom who\nwent missing after a wild night of partying. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The movie opens calmly on Phang Nga\u2019s beautiful and serene beaches,\nfamed for their dreamy soft white sand beaches and dramatic karst limestone\nscenery. The action then moves on to Bangkok with energetic key scenes\nincluding Tuk-Tuk \u2018car\u2019 chases, speedboat madness on the Chao Phraya river and\nThonburi canals, with additional scenes in Bangkok\u2019s red light districts and in\nthe city\u2019s vibrant and foodie heaven, Chinatown. As the song says, \u2018One night\nin Bangkok and the world’s your oyster\u2026\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It was reported that former USA President Bill Clinton\nvisited the set of the film in Bangkok when he was in Thailand, which led to some\nrumours that he had a cameo appearance in the film\u2026was that really his shaved\nlegs in high-heels strutting the runway of Siam Sam\u2019s GoGo bar? <\/p>\n\n\n\n

THE LOVER (1992)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ho Chi Minh and the Mekong Delta – Vietnam<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

This steamy film is set in French Colonial Vietnam in 1929.\nA young French teenage girl embarks on a reckless and forbidden romance with a\nwealthy, older Chinese man, each knowing that knowledge of their affair will\nbring drastic consequences to both of them. Based on the semi-autobiographical\nnovel by Marguerite Duras, the \u2018powers that be\u2019 of Vietnam were very much\ninvolved in the production of this film, even dictating that the love\nscenes\u2014which left little to the imagination\u2014be filmed in a studio in France\nrather than on location in Vietnam. The Lover was the first western movie to be\nshot in Vietnam after the country\u2019s reunification in 1975. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Beautifully shot both in Vietnam and France, The Lover made\nextensive use of historic locations in and around Ho Chi Minh City and the\nMekong Delta. A Paris studio was used to film most of the interior shots\nhowever. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

BEYOND RANGOON (1995)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Imagining Rangoon and wider Myanmar<\/em> <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2018Beyond Rangoon\u2019 is a fiction based on fact drama, directed\nby John Boorman, about an American tourist in Myanmar at the time of the 8888\nUprising. If you haven\u2019t yet seen this movie, then now is the time to watch it.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sadly, the parallels with what is happening to the people of\nMyanmar today are palpable. History truly repeats itself. Why is it that it is\nalways the common man and woman, the majority, that have to pay the price for a\npowerful minority\u2019s inability to acknowledge and learn the lessons from\nhistory? Lessons that are always written in the blood, pain and wasted lives of\nthe citizenry of a nation, and repeated all too often in every continent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Shot in Malaysia the movie cleverly creates scenes of old Rangoon\n(Yangon) and Myanmar as the young tourist, Laura Bowman played by Patricia\nArquette, witnesses the student uprising of 1988 in Rangoon. She watches in\nshock as the Myanmar Military viciously attempt to stamp out the students\u2019, and\nmonkhood\u2019s, political rallies and the people\u2019s calls for democracy. Bearing\nwitness to the brutality of the military dictatorship of the Ne Win Regime, she\njoins up with the student leader U Aung Ko and they attempt to escape to\nThailand to report to the world what was (and sadly still is) happening in\nMyanmar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Myanmar (Burma) is an incredibly beautiful country with so much\nto offer the world, and resource rich as it is, so much opportunity that it\nshould be offering to, and sharing with, its people. It is a living breathing\nShangri-La that is being strangled and beaten all too often by the iron grip of\ngun toting psychopaths. I am sure you join with me in praying for a rightful\nand peaceful return to democracy for the people of Myanmar. After all the death\nand devastation inflicted on our human world from the covid crisis these past\n12months, it truly beggars belief that we start a new year with such abhorrent\nscenes of abuse and hostility on a gentle and peaceful people that have surely\nsuffered enough these past 60years\u2026 <\/p>\n\n\n\n

EAT PRAY LOVE (2010)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bali – Indonesia, Delhi – India and Pataudi – Italy<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Already very well known as a bestselling 2006 memoir of the\nsame name by Elizabeth Gilbert, Eat Pray Love the movie was released in 2010 and\nstars Julia Roberts. A story of one woman\u2019s life changing journey where upon\nreaching a crossroads in her life she decides to spend a year traveling and hits\nthe road to challenge and find herself. Her travels take her to Italy where she\ndiscovers the pleasure of eating (Eat), continuing her journey in India she\ndiscovers the meaning and beauty of prayer and meditation (Pray) and finally in\nBali, she discovers the meaning of true love\u2026in the form of a Brazilian\u2026no not the\nhair-style du jour of the nether regions perfect for those string bikini days, but\nin the form of the Brazilian Felipe, a jewelry designer living on the island \u2013\nwho was rather hairy actually and could probably use a trip to one of Bali\u2019s\nincredible spas for a good waxing session. Maybe that will be in the sequel\u2026Indigestion\nDenunciation Hate\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Elizabeth certainly picked some wonderful locations for her\njourney of self-discovery and these are beautifully shared in the\ncinematography of the movie. The stunning views and natural beauty alone\nalready make this movie well worth watching from the beginning to the end as it\ntakes you on a journey from Rome and Naples (Italy), Delhi and Pataudi (India),\nand finally Ubud and Padang-Padang Beach on Bali (Indonesia). <\/p>\n\n\n\n

THE APU TRILOGY (1955, 1956 and 1959)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rural Bengal, Calcutta and Varanasi – India<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Considered one of the high watermarks of Bengali film, The\nApu Trilogy has won countless awards over the years from Cannes, Venice,\nBerlin, BFI and many others, and is regularly selected by film critics as one\nof the all-time greatest films. The movies have been cited as influences by\ndirectors including Martin Scorsese, James Ivory, Akira Kurosawa Abbas, Philip\nKaufman, Wes Anderson and Danny Boyle for the cinematography, direction and\ntechniques pioneered in the creation of this movie. The Beatles also cited Ravi\nShankar\u2019s soundtracks for the 3 movies as an influence on their work too. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The 3 movies follow the life of the character \u2018Apu\u2019 from\nboyhood to adulthood with all the triumphs and despair that a life can bestow.\nStarting out as a young boy living in a rural village in Bengal, Apu\u2019s father\nis a Brahmin and struggles to support the family. In the second movie the\nfamily have moved to the holy city of Varanasi where Apu discovers his aptitude\nfor learning. Despite the family\u2019s crippling poverty Apu pursues his education\neventually moving to Calcutta to further his education. He begins to distance\nhimself from his rural roots and his relationship with his mother suffers as a\nresult. And in the final movie Apu pursues his dream of becoming a writer. He\nis pressured into marriage which blossoms into a beautiful relationship only to\nbe dashed as his young wife dies in childbirth. The child survives and the film\ndeals with Apu learning to accept his responsibilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The trilogy beautifully tells the story of one man\u2019s life in\nIndia and in completion of the story shares a timeless expression of humanity,\none that we can all relate to regardless of ethnicity, nationality, affiliation\nor religion. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

A perfect movie for today when the big questions are being\nasked of us all as our unshakeable worlds have for many of us been shaken to\nthe core. But the simple pleasures and beauty of life are still there for us\nall to enjoy, or perhaps more importantly, for us all to appreciate. A life\naffirming piece of cinematic art of a simple man accepting the truths of his\nlife \u2013 a film for our time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
