Vessel Description

Luang Say’s custom built luxury river boats offer a unique opportunity to learn more about life and nature along the legendary Mekong River. Travelling from Huay Xai to Luang Prabang, or from Luang Prabang to Huay Xai, each of the three boats is 34 metres long and has a 40 person capacity. Every cruise has both a French and English speaking guide. During the cruise, guests will spend one night at the Luang Say Lodge.

Luang Say Lodge

Set along the banks of the Mekong River with mountain views, this traditional Laotian architectural design lodge has 20 large bungalows, each with elegant dark toned wood, white fabrics, and stunning panoramic views. The riverbank restaurant serves mainly organic cuisine. On days with 20+ more people, guests will also get to enjoy an ethnic minority dance performance in the restaurant area.

During the cruise

During the two-day cruise there are two stops to local Lao villages where guests can experience typical Lao village life. During the guided tour, guests will also witness how local handicrafts and Laotian rice whiskey are made. There will be an additional stop at the Pak Ou Caves located 25kms from Luang Prabang. The two caves contain thousands of Buddha images and are of great religious importance to Theravada Buddhists in Laos. The caves were converted into Buddhist temples during the 15th century and are used as a site for old Buddha images that can no longer be venerated in a temple, either because they are damaged or the temple in which they were displayed has been destroyed.

Your Host & The Team

“These 2-3 day cruises combine nature and culture into a unique travel experience along the banks of the Mekong River.”

Welcome to Luang Prabang

Encircled by verdant foliage and mountains, at the confluence of two rivers in north-central Laos, Luang Prabang is the heart and pride of Lao culture. Previously the capital of the first Lao kingdom, temples, pagodas, Lao wooden houses and French colonial buildings form the backdrop of this designated UNESCO World Heritage city. A feast for the eyes, hundreds of monks donning saffron coloured robes roam about on the quiet streets. Wondrous aromas of freshly cooked food and the sweet smell of frangipani trees float through the air. Celebrating life, the local people’s distinctive culture includes traditional dancing, music, and special occasions held throughout the year. The colourful stalls at the outdoor Phosy Market held nightly offer another glimpse at indigenous culture.

Most of Luang Prabang can be explored on foot or on a bicycle. Spiritual encounters can be found at Luang Prabang’s most beautiful temple Wat Xieng Thong, Vat Visoun, Vat Phousi, and Vat Mai. A slow boat ride down the Mekong River to explore the famous Pak Ou Caves and witness local village life is highly recommended. Sense the calm antiquity in one of Southeast Asia’s most atmospheric cities.
